This is McAvoys tour de force

Can't believe this movie didn't get a wider release. Can't believe how good McAvoy was in this. Like a slightly grizzled and nastier Ewan Mcgregor without the star wars baggage

I've enjoyed McAvoy since Tumnus but he hit it out of the park here. He nailed a difficult role in a disturbing and uncomfortable movie. Brilliant performance.

He was wonderfully messed up in this. very good performance.

Agreed. His acting was off the charts here. He's brilliant all through the movie and that last scene, amazing! I'm really surprised there wasnยดt more talk about it. This goes to show how awards are really about something else most of the time.

I'm with everyone on this thread. McAvoy absolutely nailed the role of a streetwise cop losing his grip on reality. The scene with him and Amanda (Imogene Poots) on the stairs is one of my favorite parts of the film. The threat of violence and intensity in that scene was riveting! I think I held my breath for the entire scene. McAvoy fully inhabited his character and played him to the max!

McAvoy has just grabbed another award for his incredible performance, the Scotland BAFTA: http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-30074727

With this one, he received a total of four Best Actor awards for Filth. But I still think it's an underrated performance from an eternally underrated actor. The thing is, the fact he didn't get a Bafta nom and Christian Bale was nominated for a forgotten role is a travesty.

how did everyone in this thread survive a childhood of ingesting only Paint Chips? is that what it takes to praise awful acting?

I so, incredibly, agree with most everyone in this thread. James has been one of my favorite actors for a while. He's always so good and reliable...but he went above and beyond with Filth. It has to be his best performance to date and dare I say...one of the absolutely best performances of the aughts so far.

He definitely deserves all the praise he's gotten so far and more, oh so much more. He really went for it in this role and nailed all of it. You just knew you were watching something special with the way he approached it. All I can hope for is that this movie gains something of a cult following where people look back on it and go, "wow, that was one hell of a performance," even if that is down the line. Bravo James, just bravo!

It was a great performance but in my mind that was the only redeeming quality the movie had. He had a good character to work with but the story was lacking a bit for my taste. It was a very bizarre film and usually I am into that but this one just didn't do it for me. I had some issues understanding some of the accents as well so maybe that had something to with it being somewhat difficult to follow.

I wouldn't recommend this to anyone unless they are big fans of James...which even then I would warn them he is great but the movie itself really isn't.

Yeah, McAvoy nearly killed it in this film---he clearly had fun with the role, and it was fun to see him play a straight-up bad guy with issues for once---would love to see him play another bad guy role, too. I was kind of surprised that the film never seemed to have gotten much of a U.S. release, seeing that he's sort of a name after having been in the X-men movies. But after seeing the trailer (and after having finally seen the film) I get why it wasn't pushed too hard over here---it's a pretty raw,in-your-face flick that dosen't hold back and pulls out all the stops. Wherever you think it can't possibly go,it goes there and back. still fun to watch,up until the darker parts kick in, anyway.

Just watched this last night and McAvoy's performance is still ringing in my head. Brilliant and he should have been nominated for an academy award for it.

I saw this last night on Netflix. I really had no interest in seeing in it - in fact, I believe I only heard of it in passing - but I was bored last night and saw it was a movie based on a novel by Irvine Welsh and I had heard of him as the author of the books behind the movies "Trainspotting" and "Ecstasy", both of which I didn't see. Also, McAvoy never really stood out to me as an actor - not that I thought he wasn't good or anything since I saw him in the X-men movies and he did fine in them - so I didn't know if he was someone who could carry the movie for me personally. The movie was not my type of movie because it was real, raw and filthy just like the title said and I heard Welsh's books are like that though I've never read any of them, and life can be depressing enough as it is without it being realistically projected onto the big screen for another time, but I did like it and I thought McAvoy was simply outstanding in this. You really have to go to some emotionally deep and dark places to get into a character like that and make it look like the feelings are real.

glad you liked it. I think this is his best movie to date - at least in terms of his performance (the movie itself may not be to everyone's tastes) and after seeing him as something of an ingenue in the Last King of Scotland it really surprised me. You might also want to check out his latest film with Daniel Radcliffe - Victor Frankenstein, which I at least quite enjoyed
