who is mcavoy's character bigoted against

Just wondering.

reply

He seems to be against black guys since his wife left him and married/started dating a black guy

reply

He's a misanthrope. He hates everyone.

reply

Bingo.

reply

He also said at least one racist remark about Asians.

reply

That wasn't him, that was his colleague in the beginning when they were sitting round in a circle.

reply

At first, then he used a similarly racist slur.

reply

Homosexuals.

reply

pretty sure hes not bigoted against homosexuals. While he uses some slurs throughout the movie - I think its to make people think hes a homophobe. There were several parts of this movie where he intentionally moves himself very close to kissing a man.

in one of his hallucinations he also (or maybe his psych doc) says that anyone who isn't willing to hook up with someone of the same sex can't achieve greatness (I'm paraphrasing).

The only bigoted thing I can think of is when he's having the conversation on the plane to germany with bladesy - they are talking about sexual habits of races and he makes some comment about someone being with a black woman being bad (again paraphrasing - I can't remember exactly what he said but it was some sort of negative insult).

again - even that might have been to just mess with bladesy because he knew bladesy was into black chicks.

I think this is one of the things from the book that is translated to the film - somethign to show the way that his bipolar behavior / personality disorder makes him do and say things to mess with people in order to watch their behavior.

thats just my take. maybe I read way too much into it.

reply

In the book, Bruce kept making disdainful remarks about Catholics.

reply

Came here to post this. It's a big thing in Scotland with Catholics and Protestants. Look up the rivalry between Celtic and Rangers soccer team. All religious. And Scots Freemasons are supposed to be very anti-Catholic.
Apologies if you knew this already!

"How perfectly goddamned delightful it all is, to be sure"

What? Can you quote their exact words cause I do not remember any such instance in the film. If it's from the book, then of course I can't tell, have not read but in the film, I'm pretty sure no such thing was said.

reply

He's bigoted against anybody who isn't himself. Females are probably the major group.

reply

he didnt have a nice thing to say abot anyone, not even the white freemasons, he is a misanthrope

reply

Funny how he was essentially describing himself when he was saying that very same thing about Dougie to Gus in the pub.

reply

many of the things he complained about in others, were in himself:

the cocaine abuse, being drunks, not able to keep their wives, being Homosexuals(altough he wasnt one,he sucked off men while dressed as a woman).
sucking up to the boss and being hypocrites.

it seems like he hated himself the most, and either he was oblivious he had the same faults as the prople he criticized or he hated the aspects of himself he saw in them.

reply

Bottom line----the dude just hated everybody and everything that stood in the way of getting that promotion he was trying to get. That was the other main point in the film--besides the fact that he himself was entirely tore up from the floor up, with his various addictions and self-hatreds tearing him apart.

reply

All you people listing the many people he is "bigoted against" are missing the point.

reply

Everyone. He has some self hatred going on too: in a deleted scene, he initiates a kiss with a gay man in a batgroon, then spits in the sink in disgust
