Checkerboard Cake

For their anniversary (not the one on the cruise ship) Buddy made a checkerboard cake and decorated it as a replica of their wedding cake's top tier.
He used circle cutters to cut the cakes and insert the cut pieces vanilla, chocolate, vanilla, so forth.

I'm inspired to make my own checkerboard cake and was about to buy the Wilton version but after reading the negative reviews on Amazon I've decided against it. I do however want to use circle cutters and I've seen some on Amazon
http://www.amazon.com/Ateco-5357-Piece-Plain-Cutter/dp/B00004S1CI/ref= sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1333082157&sr=8-1

The product info shows the measurments from top to bottom and not width. I have 9" round pans so I need circle cutters 8" to 6" and smaller afterwards.

Where would I find the said cutters?

I worked at a bakery, and you will find it hard to get a round plain cutter for 8 inches. We had one at ours, but the owner had it special made (and we didn't even use it for cakes; we used it for cutting dough).

If you really want a cookie/biscuit cutter, the Ateco's are a great product for the price and will serve you well if you take care of them.

We also had another set of cutters that were made out of some sort of plastic and are heat resistant. Kind of like this set:

Here is a hint though; if you want to cut the cake into circles, takes an 8 inch plate and place it on top of the cake. I usually had the cake fairly chilled, almost nearing frozen at this point fyi. Then you take a sharp thin knife and cut around the plate. Repeat with the 6 inch plate :) Easy Peasy!

Good luck!

I'm not sure where you would find it, but I do know that you can buy cake pans that are specifically made for doing checkerboard cakes. With these you don't have to make the cake, cut it, and assemble it, you just pour the cake batter in, and pull the separators out and then all you do is stack it afterward, making the pattern. It's SUPER easy, and much much faster. If you want, I can call my mother in law and find out where she got hers.

Thanks.
I would have gotten the Wilton version but the reviews on it swayed me away from it.
The cake didn't turn out so hot. I forgot to make four layers: Chocolate, yellow, chocolate (x2) and yellow, chocolate, yellow (x2).
The cake pans I used were 2 different brands but slightly different sizes
It didn't help matters when I added Reese Peanut Butter chips in between the layers. Maybe it'll be just the non-perils or other 'log' type sprinkles next time?
