Quantity over Quality?

Watching this programe and something is bugging me, are the big fancy cakes even edible? Like the flip flop cake, it was huge and they will have spent so long on it that it must have gone stale before it was served.
Also The PBJ sandwich cake, if some of the kids where allergic to peanuts, why couldn't they have just not had peanut butter in the butter cream, rather than bring in this massive ornate cake and a little plain piddling cake for the allergic kids? I blame the teachers for that one though.

They are but depends on your taste buds really. I never had fondant or modeling chocolate. However my coworker also watches the show and he is married. He had those type of cake at his wedding. He said fondant taste "waxy."

So it's edible but if you don't want cereal treats or fondant don't get those types of cakes. I don't like butter cream icing but love whipped so I wouldn't shop at Carlos unless I want a theme cake.

I wish I can go back in time and pinch those chubby little cheeks and tell you nothing will be ok.

I work with fondant all the time. Depending on how you make it is how it tastes. You can make it with marshmallows and that kind tastes the best. Understand, that "best" is still pretty gross. I always remove the fondant when serving the cakes, but people like to try it. You can buy ready made fondant (the really gross kind!) at craft stores. It works just like playdoh and dries hard. I have never used modeling chocolate, but it intrigues me as it seems you can get finer details.

As for the use of rice krispy treats, I agree that they do use a lot of those and it seems like cheating to me. But, the cakes are so heavy, they really don't have a choice for the life size replicas of cows, motorcycles, etc.

Marshmellows are one of those food I have to be "in the mood" for. I would not like marshmallow fondant either.
