My experience at Carlo's

This is from a post I wrote here, a few years ago. Thought I'd repost it because I'm curious to see if the bakery has improved at all.

I like cake boss, it's alright - I don't like how big carlo's has gotten now.

Every year, my birthday cake is pretty standard - chocolate and strawberry with a yellow or vanilla cake and buttercream frosting.

I didn't know where to go last year because I was new to new jersey (having come from the land of italian bakeries, New york city). My aunt suggested carlo's, she had gone there for years. SO I ordered it, went to pick it up and brought it back, started to eat it and was horrified.

They didn't give me my delcious chocolate and strawberry combo.

They gave me chocolate and pineapple. it was awful. no better way to describe it.

So i called them, and they were shocked. They told me I'd be able to have a new cake made for me ("with upgrades") so i believe i chose chocolate mousse and fresh strawberries. they also told me to bring a piece of the old cake in, i guess cause they didn't believe they could make such a mistake. so i did. went to pick up the cake, buddy was there and he apologized to me and said it must've tasted like crap.

the new cake was an improvement, but anything would be over chocolate and pineapple.

like i said, that was a year ago - December of 2008 - 4 months before "Cake Boss" started.

It's december again, so I went to order from them the other day because my birthday's coming up, but now they want you to pay over the phone...what if the cake comes out wrong? i have a feeling this 'new policy' is because of cake boss. They also raised all their prices, and they're selling merchandise...

i wish they'd just go back to making cakes without all the fuss...
