I am so confused. Wasn't he more upset that his father was never around then that they grew up poor, but he is okay with not always being at home with his kids?

Maybe I just read too much into it.

It's a lineage of the son always feeling bad that the father was not in the picture; however, since the fathers like their jobs so much, it's not a double standard.
