Unger Character

I loved this movie. We saw it when it first came out at the theatres and then bought it as soon as we could find it on DVD. The story has special significance for us after having made our own trek to Santiago in 2010. Ours was a car based trip but someday we will walk the Camino.

My only disappointment with the movie was the character Unger played. It was decidedly as un-Canadian as it could have been. It was clearly a character written by someone who knew little to nothing about Canadians, especially Canadians travelling in Europe, where we are always thrilled to be identified with our fabulous country and more than happy to meet new people from different countries - even the occasional 'Yank' ;) The character showed none of the qualities that would make it stand out as Canadian, so I question why it was even included.

Yes, very disappointing, especially since Unger is Canadian herself.

Still, though, a movie well worth watching.

I just watched this movie tonight and that character bothered me at first. I have never done anything like the Camino - I have never had a job where I could get that much time off work. However, I have done quite a bit of hiking in various National Parks (U.S.)and have met several Canadians, all of whom seemed really interesting people, and none of them were interested in hiding their country of origin, nor should they be.

I like hiking in solitude but one of the best encounters I had was in Olympic National Park, on a fairly step trail and I was about to pass a couple probably twice my age. They apologized for being slow and I all I could think of is that if I could do that trail at all when I was their age I would be thrilled. We talked for a while, they were Canadian, he was a retired university professor, (I was working on an MA at the time),his wife had macular degeneration, so they were trying to do as much as possible before she lost her sight completely.

Anyway, we only talked about 15 mins, but it was one of those conversations I will never forget. I have had a few like that on hiking trails.

Yes, because ALL Canadians are exactly the same. What a simplistic view of life you have. Even Canadians can be damaged by the things life throws at them.

A Canadian actress plays an un-Canadian Canadian character. Ironic.
