Spoilers Wizard of Oz similarities?

Ok, first off, I am a 65 year old father of a 32 year son who is a solo child, so the similarities to the movie characters are kind of linked. I just watched this movie with his grandfather and both of us were totally heart tugged. So what I have to say is not meant with any disrespect.
Having said that...Anyone else feel there could be parallels drawn from The Wizard of Oz here and there?
Just a FEW loose examples:
>The main character sets off on a journey and is joined by others until a quartet is formed.
>The four characters are each in search of a their own personal fulfillment.
>After the church service, they all kind of stand outside and knowingly smile at one another as though they have seen behind the curtain.

In the IMDB Trivia section for this film... they mention this motif... Each of the characters represents the Oz counterpart.... like how they found that one guy in the cornfield.

If I recall correctly this aspect is discussed some on the DVD commentary.

I took the scene after the cathedral service as being a silent agreement to accompany Tom to Muxia.
