... shoot Mathilde before she had shot Edward? He could just have let her shot him, and then disposed of her immediately after.

Because that's what he was told to do, in the script dude...Otherwise there could've been a sequel, and we @ Focus couldn't have that, dude.

pavel didn't shoot Mathilde. Edward fixed the gun so it would misfire and kill her when she tried to shoot him. pavel then shot Edward since mathilde couldn't.
