Timeline question

I enjoyed the movie very much--the script, the actors and their performances, the special effects/CGI.

But the scene where Charley walks to Ed's house:

Charley meets Ed at Adam's house after school --> Ed runs into Mark, then Jerry, on his way home --> Jerry turns Ed --> Next morning in roll call Ed's missing (getting Charley's attention) --> Charley walks to Ed's house.

The question is: When did Charley walk to Ed's house? If it was after school that day, then Ed's parents' comments made no sense. Mrs. Lee says Ed will be sorry he missed Charley. Charley responds, "Oh, he's not here?" Mr. Lee responds, "No, he leaves early." That doesn't make sense if the school day is over. Also, Ed never came home the night before because he got turned by Jerry. They should be upset that he didn't come home for dinner or bed. And this visit did indeed take place at the end of the day because by the time Charley walks home from Ed's it's dark.

That's the one scene that I found confusing. No big deal, it didn't detract from the film (for me anyway), just wondering if anyone else was confused by this scene.
