A Bit Overrated To Be Honest (Backed by Reasons)

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining just to complain here but these are some legit dislikes I have with this movie.

While I love the concept of Deadpool this movie just kind of wasn't for me. I'm not saying I hate Deadpool as I thoroughly loved his 2014 game but I don't exactly think this movie deserves all of its praise.

I don't outright hate the movie, there are things I loved such as the performances of everyone. Ryan Reynolds knocks it out of the park as Deadpool and T.J. Miller as Weasel is great to watch. There's also a lot of unique sequences and I love how the movie takes shots at modern superhero films.

However I have 2 major problems with this movie. The first being its status as a comedy. The movie just didn't really make me laugh, maybe three times. I think this is because many of the references and jokes in this movie are either really, really, really obscure or outdated by this point.

My second big problem is that nothing really happens in this film. I saw a bunch of posts on Facebook around the time this movie came out that said 'The reason there's no spoilers is because little kids aren't allowed to see the movie.' And I think the reason there weren't any spoilers about the movie is because nothing really groundbreaking or interesting happens! There's barely any action in this film, just 2 rather small sequences: highway and junkyard battle at the end. Both sequences which were replayed over and over again in the trailers.

Sure you can argue that the movie being so small makes it more unique and special, fine. But you've got to admit that nothing happens at all. The movie progresses rather slowly when the entire plot could've been resolved in 25 minutes. Seriously, this movie is 75% flashback and 25% modern day.

Anyways those are my thoughts on Deadpool. Any responses? Let's have an organized discussion.

Agree with you man. The thing is this movie is a little different from the usual garbage of super hero movies. So I think it is only natural people are a little bit "happy" with this movie.

The first being its status as a comedy.

For me there is this thin line that separates funny from stupid. I think this movie tread that line intentionally. I appreciate it. I wouldn't mind the 4th wall breaking but I hated when the movie became self aware: how this movie is made, sequel etc. Too much insecurity.

My second big problem is that nothing really happens in this film.

True. There should really have been more story or something I don't know. When the movie ended I said to myself "that's it?"

I mean the movie is better than a lot of super hero movies, but yes, it is a bit over rated.

I wouldn't mind though. The film makers tried a different approach and they should be encouraged. I am not going to cut the same slack for the next Deadpool movie though.

I wouldn't say I've been missing it, Bob.

Just watched it for the second time. I totally agree. The action sequences were formulaic, the villain was bland and humour was either obscure (which was really apparent for me as a Brit) or really dated. Just not for me. I won't be watching the sequel.

Absolutely hilarious, references are spot on and range from very old to very current and none of it matter. Critical and commercial success, deservedly so. The fact that you don't laugh at funny is not my problem.

mister gutsy 2299, I completely agree with you in everything. He was chasing Ajax through the whole movie so he could "fix him" and then nothing. Was a good movie but I really prefer the X-Men Movies.

This reminds me of a friend of mine in high school, who disliked V for Vendetta because 'it only had three action sequences'. Until he said that I never stopped to think about the amount of action in the film and I realised he was right. Not only that, but they were all very brief sequences. But that made me like the movie more, because it made me realise the plot was strong enough for me to have not noticed the film had nearly no action in it.

Deadpool is something of a comedic equivalent of what happened with that film. It's certainly style over substance, which make sense since an origin story for the character is going to be more about selling his oddness than the nitty gritty of how he came to be a 'hero'. Personally I enjoy this, because I don't feel every single story in a movie needs to have massive stakes, it just needs to either get the audience invested in the outcome or engaged with the characters.

For me, Deadpool did everything it needed to do very well. It's a shame you couldn't appreciate it as a comedy, as I think that's the only real way to appreciate it.

I suspect the problem is that you have too many paperclips up your nose

I agree.

The acting was good, the humour was ok, the action mediocre and the story overall was kind of uninteresting.

The 213th best movie ever made? Give me a break! My count down for never visit imdb.com ever again has just started.

I have to agree with the OP, while the characters are fun, the movie itself is pretty sparse on story. Inter cutting the flashbacks in with the highway fight make the movie seem to have more substance then it actually does. I hope that the 2nd Deadpool movie will have a more complete storyline.

I've seen enough comedies to know that you don't recommend them blind to people.

Deadpool was very funny. Was it a comedy? Well, yes! Was it a bunch of other genres? Yes!

Just because you didn't find it funny doesn't mean it wasn't funny...

A lot of people loved Death at a funeral. I hated it, and gave up very early.

A lot of people liked Blazing Saddles, and I enjoyed it very much.

does this mean that Death at a Funeral wasn't funny, and Blazing Saddles was? To everyone? and my test of both was empirical and above reproach? No!

In case you missed it.

A guy gets money beating bad guys up.
He meets his true love.
He gets cancer.
He decides to take up an offer of immortailty from shady peeps.
He turns into a superhero, but is betrayed in the process and disfigured.
He seeks revenge.
He is pursued by the X-Men, or at least the two the filmmakers could afford.
He decides to pursue his old flame despite his affliction.
He must rescure his flame from Francis the bastard.
He rescues his flame, and kills Francis, and tentatively agrees to join the X-Men franchise thereby enabling more Deadpool in subsequent big budget soulless mash ups.

Now that sounds like a good number of events and includes one fantastic fight scene, and a decent on at the end.

I for one enjoyed the dialogue and the time spent on character development (usually the BEST part of a good superhero movie, and once established the rest and sequels usually SUCK).
