NO SPOILERS!

Brick Mansions stars the late Paul Walker and parkour expert David Belle, and is a loose remake of the French film Banlieue 13. The film, which at it's best could have been a fun and exciting action romp, ends up falling far short of its potential.

While much of the action in the film is fairly well choreographed, particularly scenes involving David Belle and his parkour skills, it is often shot in such a way that makes it look less impressive than it should, and can even be hard to follow. (Though there is no shaky-cam, the action is frequently very quickly cut, ramping in and out of slow-mo far too frequently).

Another major flaw of the film is the dialogue, and the problem is twofold. Firstly, it is extraordinarily poorly written, with a mess of cliches, unnecessary exposition, and just plain cheesy lines. Also, much of the dialogue (particularly David Belle's lines) are redubbed, and very obviously so. Hardly ever does a character's mouth fully match what they are saying throughout the movie.

The acting in the film is simply nonexistent. While Paul Walker was never famous for being a spectacular actor, he looks like Marlon Brando compared to nearly everyone else in the film. Performances range from tolerable to downright silly. One wonders why such poor actors were picked when many community theatre actors could have easily played the roles better.

Finally, the plot moves oddly, going from sluggish to skipping over important information, and the ending of the film sinks to an entirely new level, and manages to be both anticlimactic and ridiculous.

FINAL RATING: D
