Would this have gone straight to DVD if Paul Walker didn't die?

I'm in no way trying to insult or make light of Paul's death, I'm just genuinely curious. I haven't seen the film yet, but based on the trailer it seems this would have gone straight to DVD had Paul still been alive. Maybe the studio thought his death would increase box office rates so they decided to release it theatrically?

I can honestly say, no. Why? Because he was riding on the success of the past couple of F&F movies, and, looking at his past credits, there is no direct to video movies in his list that would make me believe that this movie would have been direct to video as well. Hell, look at RZA's Man With The Iron Fists... did that go direct to video? No.

Vehicle 19, Hours, Pawn Shop Chronicles, The Lazarus Project and Hours went straight to dvd.

Nope.
Vehicle 19: USA 14 June 2013 (limited)
Pawn Shop Chronicles: USA 12 July 2013 (limited)
Hours: USA 13 December 2013 (limited)

Only The Lazarus Project went straight to dvd in the USA.

As far as the topic of this thread, I posted this before.

Back in February 2013 the following news story was posted.

EXCLUSIVE: Furthering its commitment to co-finance action films from Luc Bessonā€˜s EuropaCorp, Relativity Media has signed on to co-finance and be domestic distributor for Brick Mansions, the American-ized remake of the Paris-set Banlieue 13. The film will star Paul Walker, and it will be directed by Camille Delamarre, a protege of Besson. Besson, who co-wrote the original, scripted the remake with his Taken collaborator Robert Mark Kamen. Walker will star with David Belle, who starred in the original and the sequel District 13: Ultimatum. He is also the guy credited with creating Parkour, a sport that involves agility and leaping and climbing around obstacles. There will be plenty of that in these films.

So very early on the plan was always to show it theatrically. And that was about 9 months before Walker died.

"I haven't seen it yet but..."-there lies the problem with the whole of your post. How can you make a meaningful judgment on this, or any film, until you have seen it?.

reply

Though it has a straight to DVD vibe, I do still think this would get a full release if Walker was alive.

reply

I saw it because it was one of Paul walkers last movies,

reply

I don't think it deserve a big screen release! If it's his first DTV that mean that Mr Walker left us at the beginning of his way down. What a poetic way to go!
See you next life!

reply

It was not his first DTV,also Movies like this do hit theaters from time to time,The Raid,Ninja Assassin,Man with the Iron Fists(Which Also Starred the RZA)

I actually enjoyed it

Brian Mansion is more Ninja Assasssin quality
than
THE RAID !!! and The Man with the Iron Fists.

Brick Mansion was ok, but since I saw the original it was useless for me and I
don't prefer the original because it's the original !! Don't mean a time.
Just the story is too much of the same to not compare them.

reply

I still need to watch the Original,I did not know this movie was a remake til I read some of the posts here,I liked this movie so I am sure I am gonna enjoy the original

Sincerely, the original is better made. The action is good and the actor that do
the role of Walker need no double, so it add something to me.
In Brick Mansion the action is accelerated. I felt it less in Banlieue 13.
It's directed by Pierre Morel which have directed Taken!

The original have a follow up andnit was ok, but that's it.

I actually thought the exact same thing while watching this POS. (that it probably was going straight to DVD if Paul Walker hadn't died)

Its so atrocious that's its HILARIOUS!

I do think this looks VERY straight to DVD.

If a movie gets a limited release, Most people only get to see it straight to DVD or they just DL it.

If it had a theatrical release, it didn't go straight to DVD. That's pretty simple math.

reply

no BUT it would still not have been a big success or made money, and even now he has died the movie still has not made much money.

I can imagine the makers thought in the back of their head they would make a lot of money no he has passed away BUT the fact is everyone after paul died saying how great he was..where were they with his other movies that all flopped and the only movie that did ok were the fast movies and the main reason for that is other than being good is vin

don't get me wrong I like paul and some of his other films are decent but that does not mean I will make him out to be a god when he was not

Im sure that was the intention. Then after his death they decided to milk the sympathy tit and put it out in theaters. Then to add to the Fast & Furious connection, they had Vin Diesel dub Lino's voice since his english wasn't very good. Would have been more successful if they made a new script instead of copy a movie everybody already saw.

Luc Besson/Europacorp don't make straight to DVD movies.
