It was never revealed why he dropped it. However, I would guess that it was either because he came to realize that any attempt to explain it was silly and thus it was better to leave it as something the audience should speculate about or because he did not feel as though he could seamlessly work it into his narrative. When jumping ahead in time, a writer has to strike a balance between what information needs to be revealed and what information can be left as a mystery. The reason for that is because not everything can be believably addressed in dialogue, and flashbacks may derail the intended flow of a piece. The time when it made sense for Xavier to explain his situation would have been right after Wolverine asked him; "How?" in this movie's mid-credit scene. Ten years later, every character would know the how so him going over it wouldn't seem like an organic conversation but rather forced dialogue existing for the sole purpose of providing information to the audience.
