firearms in medieval Europe?
I know it's a silly movie but weren't people using muskets in that time period and not the machine gun they used in the climactic scene?

The first machine gun was intented in 1718 by James Puckle in England. It was called the Defense Gun or the "Puckle Gun"
It was a single barrel flintlock gun with multiple revolving chambers, who was operated by a hand crank.
It was not a commercial success, only very few was sold, obviously because of how slow it fired the bullets (9 rounds a minute), but it does show that a machine gun was invented in Europe before the invention of the multi barrel Gatling gun.
I believe you can't put stuff in goofs if it was made on purpose.

The occasional use of anachronisms was one of the things that made this film so much fun to watch.
shareIt's not medival Europe.
The 15th century was transition to what we call early modern era.
This looks like the early 18th century (clothing, books (=> birth register), very common printing technology, general use of glas windows etc. pp.).

Actually, I'd say late 19th, early 20th century. Sure, the style of dress is meant to invoke Medieval Europe, but the presence of cartridge arms seems to indicate the late 1800s. One of the characters is seen wielding an 1892 Winchester rifle. Either way, still a very fun movie.
share19th century, no question about that. The original story was published in 1812.
shareFunny thing is, with those stories that they are usually set a couple of generations earlier ("long long time ago", "once upon the time"), so I took 18th century as a starting point and then noticed how they put both earlier and more modern inventions and designs just for laughs.

What's with so many people thinking there was ANYTHING medieval in this film? There was nothing, because it's set in the 19th century (just like the original story).
shareIts a fantasy movie.
Anyone disagreeing ring the number in my username.

I don't get why people are complaining about historical accuracy in a movie about witches, plus I always figured if magic was real technology would be more advanced since they could combine tech with magic or use magic to find technological advances more quickly
I don't suffer from insanity. I enjoy every minute of it.
Did they ever mention the year or location?
Heck, it could be the distant future!
When the witches took to their brooms I was disappointed that there wasn't some sort of medieval Apache Tomahawk attack helicopter. After all, Da Vinci did have sketches for ideas for a helicopter.
Everyone gets everything he wants.
did people b!tch this much when they had holograms in the Wizard of Oz or did they not give a sh!t about historical accuracy in a fvcking fantasy movie back then.

They didn't care back then and just took the story as a different world with different rules. Only today do you see people upset when a world with freaking flying, magic wielding witches has guns in it because it doesn't fit the time period (which was never stated BTW).
sharelike it's been said by other ppl already: 18-19th century. Witch burning were heaviest in the 18th century Europe, and Augsburg (the city this movie takes place in) was the city with the most witch burnings in Germany. It's the Early Modern Age not the medieval times - there actually is a huge difference.
But I agree that the firearms where a 'bit' over the top.
Agreed, I didn't mind the enormous troll slamming two people aside wielding a tree and neither did the man exploding in a mess of guts and insects bother me.
But the fireamrs where a 'bit' over the top.
