This mostly works, but...

Kind of what's missing here is Boyd Crowder, and not simply Boyd in the character played by Walton Goggins, but the narrative role played by Boyd. It seemed like Boyd Crowder played this kind of character that represented something of an intermediary layer of chaos between Raylan and whoever that season's bad guy was.

There was always some kind of competition and interplay between the bad guy and Boyd, with Boyd kind of working against Raylan but somehow inadvertently with Raylan. Sort of an alternate protagonist (or antagonist...).

Justified also had a pretty good set of recurring characters who provided so much background, although I can appreciate that it took a couple of seasons for a lot of them to get fleshed out with mini-arcs that defined them and their relationship to Raylan and that's not exactly practical for a single season reboot.

I do kind of find that besides Sweetie and Sandy and perhaps Wendell that the other character feel a bit thinly drawn relative to the characters in Justified.

I do wish they could have somehow worked in Winn Duffy's character. A bit of a stretch for Detroit, but didn't Duffy also have dealings with the Detroit mob? Which feels like something of a missing element with this all taking place in Detroit.
