5--25-77 could almost be a sequel to the Fablemans...
It's the mostly true story of young filmmaker Patrick Read Johnson and his love for filmmaking, especially special effects, and the movies that inspired him. And growing up and leaving home.
So, like a sequel, But one of those 80s sequels to a 60s classic.
I don't mean that disparagingly, (maybe a little) but it's definitely a different tone. There is no soft golden reflection on the 50s and 60s, but a stark slightly sun bleached memory of the 70s... and no one wears a neck-tie to family dinner, but California Raisins t-shirts.
Most of '77 actually takes place in 1976, a mere 12 years after Fablemans' 1964. But for someone not yet born in either year, they seem more like 30 years apart. Which is actually quite fascinating. The moon landing must have really shifted popular culture in the late 60s because in 1976, Westerns are out, and Sci-Fi is in.
Fablemans is the better movie- more poignant- but I think I enjoyed '77 better.
'77 does give you a Fablemans' follow-up- it's great to see how Spielberg immediately began inspiring the next generation of creative filmmakers.
If you enjoyed Spielberg's love letter to film, you could do worse than check out Johnson's.
