Did you know this was gonna be a one season thing?

I didn't. if I had known, I would have had different expectations.

The show just needed to be longer and better plotted, it was so farfetched and rushed at times.

Twin Peaks' revival series got 18 episodes but we only got 10 for this, it's almost again like the writers just wanted it to be over and done with. The ending of episode 9 could have easily been a halfway point for the this series and we could have had several episodes of Dexter teaching Harrison the code and Angela building a case against Dexter and maybe even a new villain after Kurt.

reply

Yeah, I knew it was gonna be one season to begin with, but at the same time I thought they might leave it more open-ended so that it could be another season down the line again years later. Boy was I wrong

reply

Showtime did make it clear right from the start that it would be one series only, and that's why they called it a special event series. Then afterwards there was some speculation/teasing that this might not be the case after all, but I suspect that came from non-credible sources, as it was all written and produced well beforehand, so they knew 100% that it was a single series and that Dexter would die in the end

Pity they didn't flesh it out more though (no pun intended) as the story seemed very rushed, and it would have been more satisfying if there had been a few more episodes so that Harrison and Dexter could both have some more character development, even if the ending was ultimately the same.

reply

It really did need a few more episodes, especially considering previous seasons all had 13 episodes.

They even wasted some screen time for that oil billionaire guy in the first 3 episodes just for a pointless red herring even though it was so obvious that Kurt was going to be the villain of the season.

It’s so frustrating when TV shows take their time but then rush everything in one last episode. It’s still a pretty good final season but it really could have been so much better if they’d had a few more episodes and just paced the story a bit better.

reply

Agree entirely about the oil billionaire - a pointless waste of screen time - completely ignoring the time-honoured writing principle of "Chekhov's Gun" - it's Writing 101!

reply

Definitely, I almost forgot the oil guy existed until this comment. If they wanted to do misdirection with him they should have done it better, more to sell it. A few more episodes could have helped with that as well as a few other issues this series had.

reply

Yeah, i read it was and my mistake was to watch it. I thought it was funny they were gunna make 1 season to i guess finish it up. But it was ended in the original series. Maybe not a great finish, but still a finish.

They generally do a special 1 off series for series that got cancelled abruptly.

To me they took a bad ending on a series that was great for first several years and made 1 more season with another bad ending.

Proving sequels after a long hiatus always suck.

reply

I couldn't say always. Haven't seen all sequels after a long hiatus.

Deadwoods movie years after the series ended was pretty good

reply

Agreed, I also didn't know it was going to be a single season when I started. My girlfriend finished the series before me and when I brought up the possibility of future seasons she said there couldn't be, so from then on I assumed Dexter died and it would be a one off.

reply

I didn’t and I did NOT like the ending

reply

I've never had a problem with Dexter dying, it's just that everything was so rushed and really didn't make sense.

reply

Death or a life sentence was probably unavoidable for the character but they could have done a couple more seasons in different locales

reply

Season 1 with a cliffhanger and then wrap the story up season 2 - 12 episodes each season.

reply

That would have been better
