Why did the character need to be american?

With such an awful accent, why not simply make the character english/irish? Does his nationality pertain to the plot at all?

Oh no I think I put my ears on backwards again! I don't know what you are talking about when you say awful accent. Maybe the audio quality wasn't the best of the version I watched but he sounded fine to me.

Not to mention the fact that his accent creates a massive plot hole as it would have been immediately obvious to Bressler which Martin Harris he'd been speaking to on the phone.

Maybe he was Irish born and a naturalized American.

And while on topic, why make the passports show the character's birth year 1966 when the actor is 1952, is this relevant to the plot?

Liam being 45 is a bit of a stretch

The real question is why have a German actress play an illegal (Bosnian) alien living in.... wait for it.... Germany?

A) She was a local hire
B) They needed someone who could speak fluent German for the part.
