What a loose script in the end...

Not by any mean to bash this movie, to me it was an average drama alright up to the point when Ree brought his father's pair of hands to the sheriff to prove his death. C'mon, isn't that just ridiculous?
And then shortly after, the bail and bond guy just kind of hand her over what's left on her deceased father's bail and that's without any further investigation. I mean c'mon... did everyone just buy her story of somehow the hands were tossed in front of the house without at least questioning her further???

Okay, I have seen much worse but it just couldn't happened to a movie with so many good reviews and acclamations. The script ain't right for it to become a powerful drama and I'm sure I'm not the one with that opinion here.

They didn't really need to buy it. The main thing was that it proved that her father was dead. Besides, the cop she gave em to was indirectly responsible for her father's death so he was probably not too keen on investigating further :)

And no of course you're not the only one who found it overrated. Just like I'm not the only one who found it to be the best American movie of 2010. We all got opinions ^^

How come you say that the cop was indirectly responsible for her father's death? Did I miss something there?

reply

The cop had blabbered to Thump about Jessup planning to turn snitch. That was the reason Jessup got killed by Thump's people.

At least that is what we are led to believe during the confrontation when Teardrop and Ree are pulled over. "Why'd you tell?" "You went n got his ass killed, you happy now"? etc

reply

I'm surprised cops even went to her area at all. Risk getting shot at just to arrest some sorry criminal who's obviously dead? The encounter of the cop with teardrop on the road was pretty realistic though.

Uh... how 'bout the best movie of this decade thus far. Can't believe it's got a 7.2. I am so sick of all these freakin' comic book, super hero, high concept sci-fi, futuristic, CGI, remake, reboot, sequel, prequel EFFIN' BS!!!!!

reply

There is a point to all of what happens in the end, obviously you didn't get it.

My body's a cage, it's been used and abused...and I...LIKE IT!!

======================================================

Nobody bought it. The whole point of the movie was that asking too many questions can get you beaten up or worse. Once the police got the dead hands with Jessup's fingerprints, everybody had what they wanted. Ree saved her family, the bondsman got his bail money back, the gang no longer had to worry about somebody snitching, and the sheriff evaded accusations of mishandling the case. Why stick their necks out further? They weren't being stupid (neither was the script) they were being cynical.

What is kind of odd is, those women COULD have just delivered the hands to Ray (or whatever her name is), and not revealed where bodies were sometimes hidden.

It actually WOULD have made more sense to have the hands put on her porch, or passed off with some explanation.

reply

I think it's because she could see her dad's body to actually KNOW he was dead, and also to make her complicit in hiding his murder. If they'd just thrown the hands then she could have been less reliable or more likely to take revenge.

One possibility -- they've been ordered to help Ree, but they still hate her. So their "help" includes grossing her out by making her handle her father's corpse. Notice that THEY never touch it, they just use the chainsaw on it.

They didn't really reveal the body-dumping place -- Ree was blindfolded until they got there, and everything was dark, and all Ree knew was that it was a pond.
