Grew up in a city, been to country places like the Ozarks, but if people are really like that, you've got to really despise people like that -- who would ever hurt a young woman trying to help her family? As hateful as you can get!!! If you really look at it, makes "Deliverance" look fairly tame (it ain't your family trying to kill you)...
I got the impression that a lot of the meth they produce is for city consumption, so their behavior is really the result of corruption from the city. It's done in the country because ( as the movie demonstrates) it's hard to police a widespread area dominated by an anti-government clan.
My problem is as follow: they killed her father because he violated their kind of "omerta", their unwritten rules not to talk.
But while the mafia takes care even for the families of killed snitches, and they do it it for good reasons, not for charity, they left this girl open in the cold. And this caused them the problems which forced them sooner or later to adress this problem - in this case by giving her what she needed to prove her father's death in order to save their house etc.
If they had acted like the mafia (or cosa nostra actually - in they were blood relatives for god's sake), they had taken care for this from the beginning. It was the persistence of the girl and her stirring up of covered issues, that caused the people start talking, and by this she was putting more and more (public) pressure on them.
These stupid rednecks should have handed her either enough money (in one way or other) to keep the house, or left enough traces to confirm her father's dead.
But this unadressed issue with the family left behind in a dire situation cause a conflict they had to deal with sooner or later.
The mafia etc. is covering these things right from the beginning. It's part of the rules. If you want a quite land, you have to take care for both "ends".
The cause prima of all this is surely the poverty, but as long as this filthy scum aka Republican party is breathing and in power, it won't be adressed properly.
Ich bin kein ausgeklügelt Buch, ich bin ein Mensch mit seinem Widerspruch. Conrad Ferdinand Meyer
The mafia has a lot more resources than these people. Seriously, compare Tony Soprano's house to where these guys live. These folks are more like street dealers who live in the projects - only they live in the country.
you must never rat out other members of your tribe. my guess is that they are a mountain tribe and tribal law, especially concerning survival of the tribe, has always been more important than helping some kids. a tribe will sacrifice some of their young ones if necessary.
i wasnt talking about "urban lowlifes in chicago". this is about a white american mountain tribe who survives partly by cooking meth and sticking very close together.
