Horrible

I think the front cover of this movie was more interesting than watching it.

I mean talk about misleading! 'A riveting thriller!' that was not a thriller. I don't think 5 dollars is a lot but I do wish I could get back the 5 I paid for this. I've seen so many interviews with Lawrence and the hosts are like 'Winters bone was amazing!' Clearly they haven't seen it.

Agree. I can't recall a movie with a weaker plot - at least of those I watch as I try to watch the 'critically acclaimed' or 'fan favorite' movies with high ratings. I guess my system has a slight flaw. It requires the people rating the movies so highly to actually have watched the movie LOL!!

Don't worry kids the Hunger Games sequel is coming out soon. Many people don't like realistic movies because there is no CGI explosions and that is fine.

The acting in this was top notch and the story was pretty unique. I didn't think this was the greatest movie ever but it isn't as bad as you make it out to be. I gave it a 7.5/10 and can understand why so many people liked it. I can also understand why you wouldn't like it and it is most likely because you are in middle school.

Just because this movie was BORING doesn't mean that only movies with lots of pew pew can entertain those that found it boring. I too think this movie is highly overrated, there was nothing in it that made me think "Oscar", and I actually watched it because it was nominated. Might have been realistic, but the plot was too weak to merit wading through the slow pace.

reply

"Cant recall a movie with weaker plot?"

First, way more of a character study than a plot driven movie, and in that regard it excels. Secondly, you're a massive fan of a movie with a far, far weaker plot, characters, originality, cinematography, effects work, tension--you know what? Everything, really. Avatar blew.

Based on her performance alone I can't agree it was "horrible". In fact all the acting was very good (with the exception of the army recruiter - he was, in fact, horrible)

My problem with the film was that it didn't go far enough and had a lot of unnecessary scenes, e.g., the kids playing on the bales of hay. It needed to be edited more effectively to earn the "thriller" label IMO. More scenes like the barn where she was beaten and the boat where she had to hold her dead fathers hand while the woman cut off the hands. That was brutal but very engaging.

The struggle to raise the kids was good as well, but the story felt incomplete, almost as if they were running out of money and time and had to wrap early.

Anyway. I give it a 7....5 points for JL and 2 for the rest.

I disagree. He is an actual Army recruited and allegedly just talked the way he usually does to make the scene realsitic. I do agree that the scene felt slightly out of place with the mood of the rest of the film. I still liked it though :)

Completely agree about it not being a thriller. Imo the marketing was horribly poor. They should have said superbly acted character dram instead of riveting thriller, which it is nowhere near. It has little plot and few thrillerish scenes. Personally I really liked that it wasn't a thriller and more scenes like the barn/boat would have diminished its impact on me. Just my two cents.

reply

Sorry but i cannot at all see where you get off saying the army recruiter was "horrible" i agree with just about everything else you said but the army recruiter and his performance was about as true to life as it gets, i attend a military academy and sat through my fair share of recruitment pitches before i got here, and believe me, his scene was as close to real life as it gets without being a documentary.

reply

I agree. Everything he said was the opposite of what I expected: instead of pushing the hard sell, he was completely honest about what was involved, and her negligible chances of keeping her siblings with her. According to another poster, he was not an actor but an actual army recruiter. That doesn't surprise me.

Jennifer Lawrence was fantastic in this movie! All the acting was superb. I thought this was a great slice of life, albeit stark life. The actors did a fantastic job of sounding like native Ozarks. Even though Sally Field was good in the movie, "Norma Rae" , her accent was not. And like in "Coal miner's Daughter" I felt the same way, fake accents. Whoever was the dialect coach on this movie did a great job. The scenery was terrific. The story was not so much riveting as compelling.

reply

I agree with Valriem above. I'd give it an 8.5 or even 9. I'm hard on movies, too.

reply

I also agree with Valriem. The Ozarks is a beautiful part of the country but parts of it are more isolated than those in West Virginia we hear so much about.

When I was about 12 my father and I took a motoring trip to Missouri to see relatives he hadn't seen since he was a child. We visited 'cousins' in the Ozarks and even though the father was a State Trooper the children had never left their little hamlet. One of the boys about my age asked me if I've seen Nixxers and when I said, "Yes, many of them." He wanted to know what they looked like, how they acted, if they spoke English, etc. He assumed they were more apelike and were an oddity to the people there. I never forgot that short conversation with my 'cousins' in the Ozarks.

Since I grew up in Miami during and long after WWII, for me it seemed they were so backwards even still using outhouses, yet they were questioning about the lives of African-Americans most who lived much better than they did and in most cases spoke more understandable English. I've often wondered about that boy, who was about my age, and if he ever got out of the little hamlet in the hills of SW Missouri.

And this film brought those memories back like it was yesterday. It did a great job of showing how those people lived and still live in some places. A very enjoyable movie, well acted, a believable story, and a welcome entertainment respite. Maybe some of the folks who didn't like it saw some of their selves and didn't like what they saw. They have TV's now and can see how the rest of the world lives but they don't want anyone to know how they live.

4//1/2016 Edited to correct typo, "SE Missouri" to "SW Missouri".

I agree with everything you said. I thought this film was very well acted. The story was right on too. There are these pockets of hill people all over Appalachia and Ozarks. They intermarry and some never leave. I have visited some here in S.E Ky that opened my eyes.

WoW! You replied to a message I posted 3 and a half years ago and re-interested me in watching this movie again. After watching it again 3+ years later I still thought it was great acting and a believable good story. It certainly represented how the "clan" folks lived for decades and many still live like that today. And yes, they do stick with their own kind but some have escaped and joined civilization in larger communities.

A great film that should have won all the Best Picture Awards going.

It's a movie for mature, intelligent adults, so it's not going to appeal much to "The Hunger Games" crowd obviously. But most mature adults at least know if "The Hunger Games" is not really going to be their kind of movie, so they probably don't waste their time watching it and then waste even more time complaining how "horrible" it is.

I assume the "critics" are here because they're Jennifer Lawrence fans, but you know any half-ass talented Hollywood cutie could have done "The Hunger Games". But I don't think ANY of them could have been this good in THIS role--and then turn around and win an Academy Award at 21 for "Silver Linings Playbook". So if you don't like this movie at least give your girl her propers.

It's obvious that Winters Bone was in directed in the Ozarks. The accents for once sounded perfect instead of terrible. They did great job with the characters. The way they look, live, speak, dress, fix their hair, people helping her, stuff they cook, hunting, Ree taking care of her brother and sister, skinning their own meat ect is realistic. The pace was very well done. Storyline was entertaining. Writing was very good. Scenes were directed beautifully. Acting was great. They paid attention to little details. That's why I enjoy the movie.

I can understand some people not likening Winters Bone. This movie isn't glamours. It's gritty movie that's realistic life about very poor country people.

Agree. It's a truly gritty movie. But the small details of their daily lives really set it off.

Watched The Three Burials of Malquiades Estrada, and was really feeling like watching another movie kinda like it and watched Winter's Bone again...didn't disappoint. Just as good as it was when I watched it years ago.
