Why is this movie so highly rated?

I found this movie to be too boring for a short movie. And I couldn't for the life of me understand how everyone became very nice to Jennifer Lawrence's character all of a sudden. Can anybody help me understand this movie?

It's because they gained a ton of respect for her throughout the movie. She knew to keep quiet, but she had to take care of her family and do things you're not supposed to do in those parts. She was a hero.

That was my take on it too. They had respect for her to do everything in her power to help out her family and she know how to keep quiet.

It's not really about respect -- and certainly not being "nice." She clearly has no intention of backing down, so they now have only two choices: kill her or help her. They have already drawn too much attention by beating her up -- Dollys hate being talked about -- and killing, or even disappearing her would draw even more. Plus, she now has Teardrop, the meanest and toughest mofo in the county, watching out for her.

Helping her is the only remaining option.

because it evokes horror without any supernatural phenomena. It can actually happen in today's world and that alone makes it more frightening.

@Naif_Alkhalifah Happy to help, but the plot is pretty straightforward - what part of it don't you understand?

The reason you didn't understand it is because there's nothing to understand. The "story" is one dimensional and boring, it doesn't enable you to empathize with any of the characters because they are all one-dimensional caricatures. This movie didn't really convey any messages either. It was boring to look at and boring to listen to.

It's obvious that Winters Bone was in shot in the Ozarks. The accents for once sounded perfect instead of terrible. Of course not everybody in real life is like the people in the movie. They did great job with the certain stuff with the characters. The way they look, live, speak, dress, fix their hair, people helping her, stuff they cook, hunting, Ree taking care of her brother and sister, skinning their own meat ect is realistic. The pace was very well done. Storyline was entertaining. Writing was very good. Scenes were directed beautifully. Acting was great. They paid attention to little details. It's gritty movie that's realistic about the life of poor country people in Ozarks.

I don't understand it either (the high rating). It was so boring and uninteresting!

Cause it's really good. Duh. You obviously have absolutely no concept of what a good movie is.
