Seriously....

This was boring! Really boring! There was nothing! maybe the book was good but seriously...BORING! I've seen good films and this IMO does not deserve 7.5!

audiodivine,
You can't criticize people for disliking a film you appreciate, calling them sheep, and telling them they have crappy tastes in movies, and then admit you enjoyed "Skyline" without looking quite a bit silly.

Wow you're a *beep* hypocrite.

reply

[deleted]

I called you a hypocrite. Do you understand the meaning of that word? Read what you've posted then look up the definition. If I'm not wasting time getting more specific here, it's because I have better things to do than argue with you about something we'll never agree upon. I didn't like it, you did. Neither of us is wrong, and neither opinion is fact. The end.

Here's the deal: Some people who clearly like good filmmaking are voicing disagreement with how much praise this film is receiving. To some, it's not all it's cracked up to be, is uninteresting for several reasons, and seems over-rated. If you're one who likes the film, then just chill the f out and say why you like it and move on.

Up above there's someone who says nothing on this thread other than "evolman 123 is the biggest douchebag on the internet." It's quite a statement. Totally unnecessary, in my opinion, but I've decided to embrace that douchebag's douchey sentiment, since everyone's entitled to their opinion. And even though I'd prefer not to resort to name-calling, I'd like to pass my biggest douchebad torch to you. You deserve it.

reply

soooooooooooo disappointing. I didn't care about anybody.

"Charming company you keep."

I also found this movie unbearably boring. Maybe it was because I watched it while sitting on my bed and not in a theatre. It's kind of pathetic that people who found this movie boring are automatically cast out as someone who should stick to the idiotic filth that is Pirates of the Caribbean and Twilight. Sorry, folks, that's not who I am. I watched The Illusionist (the new animated one) the day before and loved it. I've sat through the entirety of the long-version of Scenes from a Marriage multiple times. Those movies are incredible. This one was boring beyond belief. I'm not seeing the praise Lawrence is getting in this.. she had her moments, but for the most part her acting was melodramatic and way too fantastic to be grounded in any sense of reality. I did enjoy Hawkes, though.

Then go and watch the social network one more time.

reply

I liked it. I'd give it a 6.7
In the last two days I've watched this, The Town, The Ghost amd Blue Valentine and this was the only one I DIDN'T find boring.

I must say though something I really hate about these boards: On those other films boards people who say they were boring are met with "go and watch Transformers etc..." and then you see the same responses here, albeit this time it's 'The Social Network' being used.
I liked this which isn't Transformers and has been classed as boring itself, but didn't like those. This commonplace 'theory' literallly doesn't make any sense.

I think I've learned that this nonsense of if you don't like a film you must be an idiot never really seems to hold water, and anyone who uses this standard response to defend something they liked is the real idiot.

Can't people just not like something?
Although saying "I'm a great judge of things and with my taste I should know" is equally moronic.

What do Transformers (or whatever) fans tell the likes of some of you to go and watch?
Don't any of you get that even the stupid people have started saying "people are stupid?"

Meh choke on it.

reply

When I watched it the first time, I was bored so I was browsing the Internet at the same time.

I gave it another chance, watched it in the middle of the night in a very dark room...it was great 8/10. This is a great movie once you get into the atmosphere.

reply

I don't see what's funny. But then again, I also have impeccable taste in film & music. And I'm also a filmmaker and a musician, so I don't feel bad saying I know a lot about these sorts of things.

I completely agree with Myth... Winter's Bone is not very good. The acting is lame... I've always liked John Hawkes, and I think Lawrence did a decent job, but the script and direction seemed very amateurish, and the acting reflects that. It plays like many of the non-professional short films I've seen. And I've seen many. I liked the atmosphere and initial tension of Winter's Bone, but it went nowhere. I like slow films too, but the pacing here sucked, never an exciting moment, the filmmakers failed to capitalize on the ominous tone of the opening. It's not the worst film ever, but it's clearly been over-rated by many people who seem to be impressed by the uniqueness of the subject matter. As far as that goes, that kind of poverty and desperation must suck, but that doesn't automatically make this a good film. It certainly doesn't deserve so much praise, or a 7.5.

reply

Good thing you two have impeccable taste in the arts, because your grammar and reading comprehension skills are severely lacking.

For relaxing times, make it Suntory time.

reply

I had such high hopes for this film, the only true indie in the BP category.

Whilst performances and intentions were very good. It just didn't captivate me, it has its moments but I cant recommend it.

reply

i liked it better than any cohen brothers *beep*

reply

I have no idea what you're talking about. And besides, this is a forum about Winter's Bone, not about exceptional grammar. But my grammar and reading comp? Where do you get off? I'm not even offended, b/c I know that the way I write is probably above average; and I'm not concerned at all about a baseless, superficial criticism. So, if you don't have anything substantial to say, go away and let the grown-ups chat.

reply

Grown ups? You guys go back and forth about opinions like you're some kind of great scholars in the fine art of cinema. Get over yourself is my point. If you want to be taken seriously in the slightest, work on your grammar; and your attitude for that matter.

For relaxing times, make it Suntory time.

reply

I can see your point. Actually, I can't. Like I said, my grammar's fine, and using that as an argument is ignorant and childish. Got anything else to say? I don't; I'm done.

reply

"grammar's"? Wow. I am glad you're done. Trying to form complete sentences must be hard for you. Now you can go back to strong-arming your opinion as fact.

For relaxing times, make it Suntory time.

reply

You're an idiot. It's totally confirmed now. I feel sorry for you. "Grammar's" is a conjunction of grammar and is. (e.g. "my grammar's" = "my grammar is.") You're a moron. Go away.

reply

That would be contraction, not conjunction.

Evolman, your grammar IS fine, but check your terms before you post!

In grammar, a conjunction (abbreviated conj or cnj) is a part of speech that connects two words, sentences, phrases or clauses together. The word "and" for example.

reply

I thought it was kind of slow and pretty boring too..

reply

This is a great movie! How can I go about findin' some of that impeccable taste in the arts? Seems I need some.

reply

@xvertigenx
Resorting to insults when someone disagrees with you doesn't make you clever or insightful, it only displays a lack of character.

I couldn't agree less -- just because you're (not "your") in the music business does not make you great at being a music critic -- everyone has their own taste(s)!!! Also, being a musician does not make you a great musician... I rarely agree with the expert's take on anything to do with art; you either like it or you don't, doesn't make you right or wrong but you can disagree.

But, if you thought that winter's bone was bad because it was "slow," you have got to get over your ADD... mofos, it's about character and guts and doing what you need to do to survive in a *bleeped* up world (especially the Ozarks)...

reply

I think maybe Hollywood is patting this film on the back because it re-presents a fairly accurate and stark image or visual of a class/social group that most of us know nothing about, unless of course you come from that group. I think the "art" crowd really eats this stuff up because when they embrace these films and claim to understand these characters, it makes them feel that they can relate to the real group. Without having to get too close of course.

This movie wasn't just slow, it was, yes, boring. There didn't seem to be any meaningful reason behind whatever kind of conflict they were suppose to be having. At least not enough to make the audience care or get involved. I didn't even finish watching it. Way overated.

Don't talk like that about pigs they're usually much nicer than people

reply

This movie was so incredibly slow and dull. I thought it was going to be a bit more interesting, but no, it wasn't. An Ozark girl (or Appalachia) walking around and knocking on doors, looking for her meth head father. Okay, should be interesting---wasn't interesting. Instead, she just wanders around and it never gets mysterious or interesting. After 60 minutes, I realized the movie was still in the same place as it was when it began, which is sad. Yes, okay, rural poverty isn't something really portrayed that often, but it could have been made a lot better. Hell, I watched a documentary on oil/coal in appalachia that was waaay more interesting than this film. It had much better character development even!

I really enjoyed Black Swan, The King's Speech, The Fighter, The Town, True Grit, Inception, and the majority of films I saw this year. I wasn't a big fan of The Social Network either, and I thought this was worse than that, and the Social Network wasn't worth $5 at the cheap theatre around the corner. This film was worse.

It had potential when Teardrop started getting involved but then it died. Boring.

Well...my other God calls - The Honorable Sheriff of Nottingham

the movie was great on all counts. its too bad that so many dumb-asses stumbled upon it thinking it would be a clever murder mystery or they want to appear as indie as possible be seeing some movies outside of Hollywood. And when they get something thats a little to real its thought of as boring. Also if 99% of people who didn't like it can only say "it was boring" then maybe it wasn't the movie but the people watching

reply

You're all wrong. If you read any of the comments on this thread, you'd know that plenty of smart, tasteful people expressed why they think this film is over-rated, and had more to say than just "it's boring;" and plenty of us aren't fools who never watch indie films. Don't be stupid.

reply

Teardrop had severe fartface.

reply

I felt the acting in this film was really outstanding. The characters seemed very real and very harsh at times. But I can see why people may find this movie dull. It seemed to not follow a usual formula for a plot. I'm still not sure how I feel about it. I enjoyed watching it, but I don't think it's a movie I'd watch again.. For me it was all about the performances rather than the story.

It's too bad that tense, tightly directed, well acted character dramas are considered boring by so many people these days. This movie was among the best of 2010 to be sure, and probably among the best in the last 5 years.

Debt and debt and debt and debt and debt and then All will be enslaved.

reply

It's too bad every wanna-be cinephile thinks that everyone who doesn't like this sloppy, luke-warm, piece-of-crap "character drama" just doesn't get it. There are plenty of smart people who don't care for this film, b/c they just think it isn't good enough to deserve so much praise. I can't think of another indie film in the past ten years that disappointed me as much as this one. If you like it, then just like it and leave the people who don't like it alone.

reply

It's too bad people take offense to simple statements on an online forum, and reduce themselves to shallow, vague adjectives for to describe a film they didn't enjoy.

in the A.D.D. country of America, many people can't sit through this. I know my friends that I can recommend it to and the ones i can't. it's not sad people can't enjoy this movie, it's usually the same people that can't finish a book from start to finish.

were you listening? or were you looking at the women in the red dress?...

reply

I thought that I liked the film, but reading this thread, I realize how wrong I was. Really, when I think about it, there was no nudity, no explosions, no pirates, no CGI, no clear cut explanations about what was happening. Just a story and some real characters. What's American cinema coming to?

reply

haha, well put. But I'd like to point out that there are still wonderful movies being made today, it's just the character pieces (winter's bone) that are up for Oscars that are the ones being hated on for being slow and boring b/c the younger crowd can't believe it! and i'm willing to bet there are way more high schoolers online than 30+ to add hate to threads like this.

were you listening? or were you looking at the women in the red dress?...

I thought it was pretty boring too. There was no real character development, no answer at the end who dunnit, it just kind of ended. I really had no connection to the characters or a real drive to know what happened or care why.

And yes I read more books than most people I know.

I agree with you AlftheSacredBurro. This is one of the best movies in the last 5 years. I found it anything but boring. I loved how the viewer was finding out things at the same time Ree was finding them out and it was like you were on the journey right there with her.

I think all the performances were really believable and maybe that is what people don't like about it that it's too real.

I watched it for the 3rd time last night and enjoyed it as much as I did the first time.

Dale Dicky's performance was also really good and I know I wouldn't want to mess with her.
