Sophie terribly miscast

The actress is somewhat "exotic" looking, but she is not beautiful, and she has ZERO chemistry with Hiddleston. I found it completely unbelievable that Pine would risk his life for her and leave his job, even temporarily, to be with her.

Completely agree, from her first scene I didn't get the casting. Seems a little old for him and zero chemistry

reply

Bet you're no spring chicken!

reply

Why are you making personal attacks to defend fictional characters? lol.

I was hoping she would be killed off... She was so annoying...

reply

I think it was just her voice

It sounded too strange to me

But Pine does understand arabic and he was in Cairo presumably for a reason so maybe he's into that

So yeah, that's how I feel anyways

reply

Beg to differ somewhat. Her character was meant to be the sad lonely victim who "needed" a friend to take of her. I agree the directing and scenes didn't necessarily build up the relationship but his remembrance of their relationship will guide his actions in later episodes. She is a bit older than him 45 vs. 35. Pine's next love interest/intrigue (Elizabeth Debicki) is only 25.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder... I thought she was absolutely gorgeous myself. Portuguese born and French nationality.

People seem concerned that Pine as Night Manager leaves his post. I think he would have a Deputy who could manage for a few hours until the day staff took over. I get the impression that you think he should "clock in and clock out" like you do perhaps? Some of the other remarks border on racial discrimination. Take care.

I don't know what post you are replying to.... there is NO discussion about "clocking in" in this thread or racial discrimination. Please redirect your message.

I thought this Sophie was wonderful, beautiful perfect in the role...(as my father used to say) the "perfection of imperfection". One cannot underestimate the pull... attraction of a mature but young man for an elegant worldly complex "more" mature woman. She had a calm melancholy presence, intriguing. Sophie tells Pine he did the right thing when he showed the papers to his embassy. "I would have done it myself if I had been brave" she says; that's the moment Pine was hooked - equal parts love and guilt. She became part of him at that moment because she had courage and conviction, could see the truth and act on it however dangerous, which he admired; she knew exactly what she was doing in passing the information. Her hope and only chance, they both knew, was in trusting that he would/could come through for her which turned out to be impossible for them both - not his fault but in the end Pine could not forgive himself for being unable to save her. The moment when she came back to the hotel knowing full well she would face Hamid gave me chills... Wonderful acting to convey so much in one brief episode. She impressed me!

I agree. I thought the actress was right for the role and did a good job with it. I'm not sure why others don't like her. Maybe they pictured someone younger and sexier. But i thought she was very attractive. I didn't read the book, so i don't know if her description there differs from the actress.

Fraaaank. FRANK! Get my jean bin. Susie wants my jeans.
No she doesnt.

reply

Younger? She isn't old; doesn't look older than him!

Jealous much? Why are Americans so obsessed with age? Bet no one here looks as good as this woman does!

reply

the type of woman who would always need someone to take care of her .

reply

I must agree, though it shouldn't matter, really. Look at that blonde woman hanging all over the very geeky, much older Roper/Hugh Laurie! Is money that important? Probably.

But that's the problem with condensing a book like this: you're bound to leave out many things that make such a character alluring despite their looks not meeting a certain "standard"!

Think about THIS: Diane Keaton as a recruited spy (similar to Hiddleston's Pine) in the film version of "The Little Drummer Girl". Talk about horrible casting. It took her years to morph into the kind of actress who could portray Louise Bryant in Beatty's "Reds".

Don't get me wrong...
It might be unbelievable,
But let's not say so long

I agree. Another bad casting choice.

I just started watching the series, and my first immediate thought when I saw Freddy Hamid was, why exactly would he have such an old mistress? I could understand it if he was like 60, but he is way younger than her and richer than god. Totally unrealistic.

reply

Old? You need to get your old eyes checked!

reply

He is 30 and she is 46. In that part of the world that's unlikely, to say the least.

reply

He's 35 ..not 30 & looks older (as often pale/pink skinned people do) while she looks a lot younger (no wrinkles!) Obviously great genes +melanin!

You rant about how old she is only because her REAL age is listed. No wonder actors lie about their ages! Sheesh..a ridiculous amount of jealous, catty women on IMBD & pudgy little bald men. Highly doubt they look as good (and as young/svelte) as this lovely well preserved woman.

Prove us wrong. Post some CLOSE-UP
pics in (HD)

I googled the actor, he was born in 1986.
In any case, why are you responding to me and not the other people who say the same thing?

reply

You just proved, you really are an old broad who needs reading glasses!

Tom was born in 1981..not 1986!

reply

Just how stupid are you? I was talking about the actor playing Freddy Hamid. My whole point initially was about the total unlikelihood of his character having such a mature mistress.

Still seems to me that she was just cast as a favor to someone in power, because in any other respect this casting choice does not make sense.

But like I already said on the other board where you are stalking me, go harass someone else with your idiocy.
