Is there enough meat here for a sequel ...

I initially felt that the story has run its course.

Where are they going to take the story. Then I realised, I am wrong. There are definitely plots that could be continued into a sequel easily.

The first is that the traitors in the govt. all seemingly got away. There are Felix and who was the other guy, Catlyn Stark's brother in GoT, that got scot free.

A second series could pick up from their trial where in the courtroom they reverse the tables or something, or better still in the 2nd series they have to plot to find a way to pin the blame on them, as there is still relatively little in regard to evidence against them.

However the viewers are not going to be interested in seeing two (in regard to roles) supporting actors from series 1 get their comeuppance. They want to see Roper in action again, and Jed and Pine.

I suppose that cud be arranged too, as remember Roper was not arrested, by the cops, but effectively abducted by a group of bad guys he had robbed. Now as much as they would love to pound Roper into the ground they would like their 300 mil more.

So perhaps Roper is let loose on the understanding that he will return their 300 mil, and Roper goes after Pine for the 300 mil or arranges another arms sale or is lured into an arms sale by Pine and Angela to this time be nailed for good.

Thoughts?

The thing that made this drama worth watching was Hugh as Roper, the two Toms in their roles, and the dynamic among the three of them.

Since we lost one of them, the only reason i'd watch season 2 is to see Roper return to seek revenge on Pine/Birch and the other trying to bring him down once again.

If it's just going to be the same thing with the same players (minus Roper and Corky) and a new villain, i don't think i'd be interested.

I agree the show without Roper and Pine doesnt work.

What ever sequel that plan, MUST be a continuation of their stories and feature both.

I wish they would have kept Corcoran alive so that if Laurie & Hiddleston didn't want to do a second season, Tom Hollander could've taken the lead. There was a lot of meat to that character, and they did him disservice by killing him off as in the book when he caught Pine at the fence, he ended up acting in the best interest of Jedd and helping her to escape instead of turning Pine over to his boss.

That was the whole reason he had tears in his eyes when he was warning Pine to stay away from her. He's like a protective older brother to her.

Despite reports the BBC and the production team were keen to do a second season using a new original storyline, it appears it's not going to happen.

Both Hiddlestone and Laurie stated last week at the US premiere that as far as their concerned it was only ever going to be done as a one off adaptation and that's been done.

Some thoughts.
- Helo et al were not traitors. They did not betray their country, but rather protected Roper whom many thought was more in the interest of UK/US to keep around.
- Season 2 could be Roper hunting down Jed/Pine for revenge.
- Courtroom drama would be Broadchurch all over again. :)
- Roper did not rob anybody, Pine stole from him and blew up the weapons. The Arabs shoudl really be mad at Pine, not Roper. And isn't he the owner of Tradepass anyway?

I don't want a sequel - prefer to think Roper was killed by those who think he betrayed them - but does anyone know if le Carre wrote more than one novel featuring Tom Pine, as he did with George Smiley?

I checked the author's page but it's not clear to me. I think Hiddleston could easily continue the character but with his movie career growing he may not be interested.

I do not particularly want a sequel (or Season 2), but I would love to see Roper survive and come out on top, exercising revenge on Jed and Pine. Of course, they would never shoot a show like that ...

What if they killed Jed thinking she had the money...Roper loved her and Pine got her into the mess. They could join forces and seek revenge for her death.

I was thinking that with Angela Burr Geoffrey Dromgoole and the Permanent Secretary turns the tables on her and she is tried and convicted for stealing the classified MOD end certificates and she gets a very long prison sentence.
