He didn't learn his name was Angus until way into the series and then he hates it and used it as little as possible. By starting off the show with him saying "My name is Angus MacGuyver." you already start things off on the wrong foot.
shareI dont remember him not knowing it just that he hated it. But it is a moot point anyway because they kept it a secret so long because the fans didnt know. Guess what? They know now. We didnt learn the name till the last episode (if I remember correctly) well now we know. No point in hiding it unless they planned on changing it.
shareI stand corrected that he did know it. I thought in the Merlin episode he didn't know his name, just that he shared the same name with his ancestor. But he hated the name and wouldn't say it. So if the new MacGuyver is going to keep using his name, it just feels wrong. Just because people know his first name is Angus or can look it up, doesn't mean they had to say it on the show right off the bat.
shareI think he only used his first name when he introduced himself in the narration at the start and from then on, only referred to himself as MacGyver. So I doubt the name Angus will be used regularly on the new show.

shareThe writers on the original only identified him as MacGyver and came up with the "he didn't like it" so they didn't have to come up with a name immediately. He was going to be called Mac or MacGyver in the episodes so there was no need to figure out a first name. (Felt it was a little strange that even Harry didn't call him by his first name but, this is television...)
This MacGyver has technically only used his full name of Angus MacGyver in narration to us. Within the actual episode he was introduced as MacGyver and called either Mac or MacGyver. I'm pretty sure the team knows his first name (not so sure about bozer!) but they don't use it and within the episode neither did he.
