This is more Mission Impossible
This isn't MacGyver. It's like the writers and director never watched the original series or understood what made MacGyver so special in the first place. The focus on this reboot is that MacGyver is smart. While that is true, he is smart, MacGyver is just so much more than that.
The old MacGyver was creatively smart in bad situations--situations without the crap load of technology at his fingertips this new MacGyver seems to have access to. This feels more like Mission Impossible meets Pretty Little Liars, a cheesy ABC Family drama strapped with fancy ass gadgets. They would've been better off making this character like a Jack Reacher of sorts. That way they could showcase his extraordinary intelligence without all the super modern technology.
Another problem, a bigger problem, is that MacGyver was sexy, extremely attractive, charismatic, sexy, funny, sexy, and likeable--oh, and also sexy. Richard Dean Anderson is a great actor who brought heart and believability to that role. This guy is average at best with zero charisma. Why make a reboot if the intention was to keep it so far below the original, in terms of standards. I just don't get it.
