not the 80's version...

So within the first ten mins Mac is banging the tech support, and a few people are dead. In all of the 80's version I recall neither of those happened ...ever. This is not a kids Mac by any stretch.

MacGyver was a lone wolf who worked outside the box. He did stuff with a paperclip and a wad of gum. And he didn't kill people. Avoided violence at all costs.

Plus we didn't even know he name was Angus until the very last episode.

Which for this show must be the first one.

I will probably watch more of the new MacGyver but my impression is low.

Something I don't like is the Red John character in Criminal Minds and Moriarty character in Elementary; that kind of continuing character. It looks like they will do that type of thing in MacGyver too. I am even more likely to give up on the show because of that.

reply

Yup outside of Murdock, no one accidentally died in his escapes before. Now he's already killed 5-6 people.

It definitely has a more grittier approach I agree maybe it's aimed more at teens.

reply

That's an insult to teens.

In the original, quite a few people died from him blowing stuff up. Which I think is how most of the people in this episode died.

Also what he did to Murdoc regularly SHOULD have killed him.

reply

No it's not the 80's version and it does not have to be to be something which is enjoyable.

It's not 1980. It's 2016.

All your statement does is point out just how much the original "MacGyver" was a product of it's environment and a product of the 80's. This is a reboot and by definition it doesn't have to be exactly like the 80's version. And it's also been updated to be a product of now, 2016.

If they want to change the essence of the title character, change the way he operates, change the environment in which he works, change how he relates to weapons, change the secondary characters that are around him and make up his universe--then don't call it MacGyver. Make it a whole new show with a new name.

reply

EXACTLY!! This is no Macgyver. They didn't even get the opening theme right. At least Hawaii five-o got the theme song.

to the last part, I don't particularly disagree. But is there a standard as to who much of something has to relate to the original material before it can be called a reboot? Like others have mentioned, a lot of the change is a product of the time change. It's 2016. How many people do you know now who act like people did in the 80's? How many things can we do now to handle situations like we did in the 80's. Everything and everyone operates differently now. MacGyver from the 80's couldn't stop crap without a hacker in 2016.

I do get where you're coming from though, but I think it's more a matter of approach than anything else. I think a compromise would have worked. Like say a NEW show that ties into the original MacGyver. It would have been better served to have the titular character in this show be Mac's son or grandson. Have him share a lot of characteristics his father/grandfather had. Have him been taught his skills by the original MacGyver. Then he could be his own man while still sharing similarities. In fact, as I watch MacGyver, that's honestly how I imagine it.
