Isn't the number one rule, that he does not use weapons

And he's never touched a gun or rifle in the original and relies on his intelligence to make something out of nothing. So i rest my case, this is a big fail. I saw him use a gun in the reboot..

He used a gun once or twice in the original. Only just like in the reboot - not in the normal, approved way. He used it the "MacGyver" way!

Right. He never carried a gun, and he never picked up a gun and shot anyone with it in the original. That was a main feature of the character. But I remember him taking a gun away from someone in a fight, and hitting that person with the gun to subdue him. Didn't fire the gun. And in the pilot he did shoot a gun once, but not AT anyone, just kind of in the air as a whole bunch of goons were blasting away at him and the person he was rescuing. Then he tossed the gun away.

He shot a gun once in the '85 pilot - about 8 minutes into the "Opening Gambit" - as they used to refer to it - this is an element which would be good for '16 to do as well. Mac & the the and the pilot he was rescuing were setting up shop behind some rocks, he fires one shot, then tosses the gun to the pilot to get ready for the big jump/escape. I thought the episode which told us why he didn't want to use a gun for the purpose [of what guns usually are used for] was well done and showed us one of the better MacGyverisms. No need to carry a ping pong ball in your shoulder bag, no toothpaste or chocolate to build a fire (I prefer the former because it's a lot easier to have a toothbrush/toothpaste/floss without justifying it to anyone else although I do have a sweet tooth for chocolate), etc.

I remember him using a revolver to turn a valve in an episode after he took the chamber out of it.

The closest time he was going to use a gun was that time he had amnesia. But his gut feeling stopped him.

You mean to pistol whip that guy in the back of the truck? His rule is to not use guns to shoot anyone, not that he won't use guns at all. Jack even commented that the way Mac used the gun wasn't what he had in mind.
