MacGyver plays HOCKEY not basketball!!

But I guess Lucas Till can't skate. They should teach him because ice hockey is a MAJOR part of MacGyver's upbringing!!

No kidding. They should have gone the route Hawaii Five O did and made it a continuation of the story, not a reboot. That way they could have maintained the affection while still updating for a new century and the new reality. It's a shame this was just a cheap money grab.

Which is why I've said '85 should be canon. It doesn't mean he's magically become younger in the previous 31 years, just who he (and the other characters) were should just carry over. If they want George Eads in it, he's not age appropriate and would just have to have another character's name.

reply

H5O is NOT a continuation! It IS a REBOOT. While Steve McGarrett may supposedly (and I question it at this point) be the son/grandson of the original the rest of the cast has nothing in common past the name of the character. It is nothing more than a "cheep money grab" (as you said) by CBS that has been on every entertainment writers "most likely to be cancelled" list practically every year.

reply

Usually when quoting somenoe, one actually quotes what the original poster wrote. Cheep is what chicks do; cheap usually refers to quality (not necessarily price), although some use it to indicate price only.

Having been too young to watch the original H50 when it was done, and never caught it in re-runs, I was only aware of the McGarrett and Dano names. McGarrett has referred to his father on the force, and don't quote me on this, because I don't regularly watch the show and it has been on for several years, but I think that the Dano came about because of the father's partner of the same name. Not that Dano is related, just that the coincidence struck Steve and he ran with it. Thus, technically, H5O is not a reboot in the sense that most reboots are - totally ignoring the source and restarting the 'story'; it doesn't tie directly to the original - as in, it isn't an immediate continuation. Instead, it uses a new character, who is the son of the original. This gives the writers a wide range of directions to take the character as there are no characteristics, tics, what have you already known to the prospective audience.

Right on Livvy! If you don't have him growing up playing hockey which shaped his life in some ways then it's NOT MacGyver! You're changing the very history of a very unique character!

I also love the beginning of the original where they show Mac skating in the intro with his hair waving behind him! That's cool and that AIN'T basketball!!

But this is a new reimagining of his character. It's ok he likes a different, more popular with American youth audiences, sport.

Really, it's ok. The show doesn't have to be an EXACT replica of the original. It's about the concept, not all the minor details.

Hot guys + dark subject matter + plenty of violence = watchable television.

But you see, for me and many others, this is the problem.

You can change the situations MacGyver gets into. You can change where he lives. You can surround him with different people. But you can't change the essence of MacGyver himself, or its NOT MacGyver. It's something else.

MacGyver is from Minnesota, and he grew up playing ice hockey. That's part of the background of the character. It's not a minor detail. It's like doing a "reimagining" of House and saying, the "new" House doesn't have a Vicodin addiction. Yeah, you can do that. You can call the show House. But that wouldn't be Gregory House.

What they've done is change so many "minor" details about this new MacGyver that they really would have been better off creating a new character with some of the features of MacGyver, but giving him another name.

reply

It's a minor detail that doesn't change the story. Small character details don't matter, like what sport he prefers. The main concept still stands. House is a "brilliant doctor with a Vicodin addiction". To change that, would majorly change the story. Changing House's preference for Monster Trucks to NASCAR wouldn't affect the story line hardly at all.

Oh, but it DOES matter cumulatively. If all they did was get rid of his hockey playing, well you might have an argument. But from what I've seen and heard, they've changed a lot of "details," and when you do that it adds up to a huge deal, because you change the essence of who the character is.

reply

Ok, I guess we just disagree! I dont mind the character being different as long as his main mission is the same.

Ok, I guess we do disagree. But that's cool. It's just discussion.

And when it becomes a major part of a storyline you can complain about it. But when it was a small part at the end of the episode that was there to fill in a few minutes and show that they are normal people - Who Cares!!!

They changed hockey to BB, Jack from being the affable goof trying to evade the law, to being more than 20 yrs older and in law enforcement, Mac being a nice guy , not crass, and showing flash backs of him banging Nikki. Nikki was not completely ethical, but she had a good heart. And I don't know if I ever saw Mac eat a lot of meat, much less a hamburger. He was more seafood and catch your own meals.
