better than it's getting credit for

first off, i practically worshiped the original show. i was young when it first aired and macgyver helped me to think outside of the box. i loved the no guns problem solving solutions he'd come up with on the spot. i carry one of a few SAK at all times, grew to love the outdoors b/c mac was a nature guy, and have found myself using paperclips, duct tape and /or rubber bands to solve issues more times than i can count. at work i am nicknamed macgyver b/c i can help fix minor problems on the fly, lol. RDA was and will always be my original Mac, and i pray/wish/hope that he'll eventually agree to play Mac's grandfather, Harry, as a wink and a nod to us loyal fans. since the original show stopped airing, i can't tell you how much of a sort of withdrawal i went through, longing for more adventures and ideas to play with. i looked for books with "similar" characters, and movies or shows with heroes who could think their way out of sticky situations (such as Burn Notice, which was amazing). i'll tell ya, it's not easy finding close replacements. (btw, if anyone can recommend books with like minded characters, please share)
ok, now for this version. i like it! is it a carbon copy? nope. does Lucas have the same vibe/persona as RDA? nope. but he does have a swagger that Macgyver should carry and he does resemble what Mac should look like. also, he is the straight man to the foil characters like in the original. the original theme song, of which may or may have not of been my ringtone from time to time, gets an homage paid to it in the opening sequence. but i digress... people seem to focus on what this show doesn't do rather on what it does do for the fans of the first show. i love that they do the openings where Mac is in the middle of an opp already. i love they do the voice over narration like the original (as did Burn Notice). he still uses the good ol' SAK! these episodes all have a vague look and feel of original earlier episodes, though the stories are different, and if you're an eagle eyed viewer, there are easter eggs-a-plenty.
yes, they've updated characters for the times, and i am not a fan of Bozer. the original show had Mac be more of a loner on missions, and this newer one has an ensemble. i can accept that. bottom line is that i am happy and excited that i FINALLY get to watch new adventures with an old friend, even if he's aged backwards and i haven't. anyone else care to admit they like it as well?

I like the show. You just kind of have to accept it as its own thing and not compare it to the original. It is a separate beast from the old show. Its basically only MacGyver in concept and everything else is different. As you said the original Mac was a loner who operated mostly on his own. On this show he is a part of a team.

I can't stand Bozer though. Horrible actor and character. He is just the token black guy. You can't even call him the best friend character because that is clearly Jack.

i agree that it is definitely it's own beast. and i hope going forward, viewers will accept and respect it for what it is as the characters evolve and story lines are followed through on. i am curious about how thornton will eventually play out, as well as murdoc!

I totally agree with u!! I like this show, I'm 30 yr old fan from Europe (English is not my native language so I apologize for any language mistakes in advance) &as a child I watched/remember old show&I know this was beloved show, but I understand how modern tv works&times have changed. The Pilot of this version was great and then yes - quality of the writing deteriorated, but since 2-3 episodes its getting better and better. As I said in one post on this board, ppl dont get almost every show needs time to sharpen up and find its place, also what I already wrote above - its a matter of time&change. MacGyver cant be the same in 2016 as it was in 80's. He could work mostly as lone wolf in 80's coz there was no internet, gps, smartfons&new tech, now he is against modern terror groups and they have all the modern tech too, so if he was all alone, him winning - it wouldn't be believable. And nowadays, action/crime/drama shows are almost entirely based on the interactions of a team, so for me- him working alone in the field - it would be simply boring.I like this team, yes Bozer is often annoying but he is also getting better in my opinion& its clear his skills will be needed in the future, I think in connection to Murdoch as well, smth with his face, I can see it&it will be intresting to watch. I see some ppl hate actor who plays Murdoch, but I think they will be surprised. I saw him in many movies& dude is very good actor, with better writing he can improve like everything else. Same thing with Lucas Till, he is actually young&very talented actor, but in this world, acting, you also need a lot of luck - to get great roles, to get better. Thats why I dont understand hate on actors too, I actually work in movie/tv business and let me tell u - yes, its trivial truth but I get it on so many levels coz of my work - with bad writing even Meryl Streep would look weak. But again, u can see writing is getting better&all characters will improve as well.

Ppl hating new show simply forgot, its new version, different times&also ppl tend to get nostalgic coz of their own childhood experience, so its only natural the shows they watched as children, athletes or any heroes from that era, ''their'' era - are always better. Humans are simply emotional creatures& emotions can cloud our rational judgement. So I understand for some this Mac will never be Mac, but I respect ppl like u, who can look outside the box and just fair. Its rare, coz today internet is ruled mostly by hypocrites, trolls and haters who just like to jump on hate bandwagon without logical thinking first. Thats why I think IMDB is closing message boards - too much hate, too little reasonable discussion.

Well said all of you. Great story OP. The only reason it has such a low score is that too many bandwagon haters came on the first day and gave it a low score and posted negative comments. Like pearldiver said, this is why they are shutting down the boards. Can't believe they caved in because of trolls.

I gave the show a chance by watching a few episodes and it gets better every time. The acting and lines have improved since the pilot. I really loved the last episode with the evaluations.

senor f'n braggis, pearldiver, and greek316, i want to take a moment and thank you for your input and responses to my original post. i've been reading posts in imdb for years but never considered signing up until just recently when i thought i would defend a show i enjoyed... this post was my first one, and it kills me that imdb is going to close these boards. i have loved reading debates and discussions on the boards for any number of movies/shows over the years. and now that i finally caved in and supported a show i believe in, it's coming to a close and it kills me that we are being silenced. (steps down from soapbox) now! as for our boy mac, i would love any input on your favorite macgyverism, on this show or the original. i accept that some are stretching the truth, but i kinda dig that! the original pilot had mac use chocolate bars to neutralize leaking acid. i think the glider made outta bamboo and duct tape was a highlight for me in the original. there haven't been enough episodes of the newer version, but so far i like...tbc
