better than it's getting credit for
first off, i practically worshiped the original show. i was young when it first aired and macgyver helped me to think outside of the box. i loved the no guns problem solving solutions he'd come up with on the spot. i carry one of a few SAK at all times, grew to love the outdoors b/c mac was a nature guy, and have found myself using paperclips, duct tape and /or rubber bands to solve issues more times than i can count. at work i am nicknamed macgyver b/c i can help fix minor problems on the fly, lol. RDA was and will always be my original Mac, and i pray/wish/hope that he'll eventually agree to play Mac's grandfather, Harry, as a wink and a nod to us loyal fans. since the original show stopped airing, i can't tell you how much of a sort of withdrawal i went through, longing for more adventures and ideas to play with. i looked for books with "similar" characters, and movies or shows with heroes who could think their way out of sticky situations (such as Burn Notice, which was amazing). i'll tell ya, it's not easy finding close replacements. (btw, if anyone can recommend books with like minded characters, please share)
ok, now for this version. i like it! is it a carbon copy? nope. does Lucas have the same vibe/persona as RDA? nope. but he does have a swagger that Macgyver should carry and he does resemble what Mac should look like. also, he is the straight man to the foil characters like in the original. the original theme song, of which may or may have not of been my ringtone from time to time, gets an homage paid to it in the opening sequence. but i digress... people seem to focus on what this show doesn't do rather on what it does do for the fans of the first show. i love that they do the openings where Mac is in the middle of an opp already. i love they do the voice over narration like the original (as did Burn Notice). he still uses the good ol' SAK! these episodes all have a vague look and feel of original earlier episodes, though the stories are different, and if you're an eagle eyed viewer, there are easter eggs-a-plenty.
yes, they've updated characters for the times, and i am not a fan of Bozer. the original show had Mac be more of a loner on missions, and this newer one has an ensemble. i can accept that. bottom line is that i am happy and excited that i FINALLY get to watch new adventures with an old friend, even if he's aged backwards and i haven't. anyone else care to admit they like it as well?
