Anybody else feel like this was a poor copy of Stand By Me?

Stephen King’s best works, and conversely his best film adaptations, have always focused on the horrors that people do to one another. The supernatural aspects of his library aren’t nearly as compelling as his malicious characters. A miscalculation was made in moving the time period to the decade of excess.

In the same way that It is a supernatural version of Stand By Me, King's "The Green Mile" was clearly a supernatural version of his short novella Shawshank Redemption, which was published like 15 years before Green Mile.

yep

There is actually a great term for this, a favorite of mine, and even though its underused, you'll probably recognize it immediately or you already know what it is, and these later supernatural versions are "spiritual successors," which is kinda nuts that Kings spiritual successors are both supernatural versions.

That might be intentional on his part!

I have always felt that some of his best works have to do with children and the real terrors of childhood. Of course, King just turns it up a notch.

As for Green Mile and Shawshank Redemption, Both are great prison movies.... both involve love for fellow man.

No. It is not a copy of Stand By Me lol. Seriously, what a ridiculously closed minded way to look at something!
This is a completely separate story. Literally the ONLY similarity is the fact that the main characters are young kids.
That is it.
You're a moron.

If they had retained the 1950s setting, THAT would've been a miscalculation.

Put it this way: Who would relate to this movie set in childhood if it had been set in the 1950s? You would have 70-yo men and women watching it, which is just EWWW.

All I could think about was Stand Be Me while watching this. Especially Lil Kief. I think that was more the filmmakers taking inspiration from the film, but it was far too heavy.
