Really underrated

I saw this on Christmas day 2017. This film is a comedy/drama about a man who decides to undergo a medical procedure that will shrink him so that his resources will go further. I really enjoyed it. The movie was directed by the consistently good Alexander Payne (Election, Sideways, The Descendants, Nebraska) and stars Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz, Hong Chau, and Kristen Wiig. The screenplay was really well written and the film is smart, laugh out loud funny, and moving. The whole cast is good, but the real standout is Hong Chau, who should have been nominated for best supporting actress at the Oscars. She is funny, interesting, and shows a wide range of emotion. Her memorable performance was one of my favourites of last year. In my opinion, Downsizing is Alexander Payne's best film and one of the best films of 2017. I rate Downsizing a big 9/10.

I just saw it last night, despite the low rating.

It's a very strange film, with unusual pacing, and an odd mixture of drama with dashes of humour.

I found myself getting sucked in straightaway, willing to suspend my sense of disbelief and imagine what it'd be like to be in the place of MD's character, and his wife, in the first part. I thought it was going to be a straightforward comedy, so was thrown at first when it turned into a full-on drama. Hadn't paid attention to who the director was; that would have helped.

I agree that Hong Chau was amazing in it. Her accent, manner of speech and mannerisms were wonderful. I completely believed her character, and loved her range in it.

This is one I'm going to have to watch again. At this point I give it a solid 7, maybe an 8. This may go higher on rewatch.

Now that I've seen it, I'm surprised at all the negative comments, here and on IMDb.
