Command Structure NCIS:LA?

I'm confused on the chain of command structure of NCIS: LA!

Hetty is Operations Manager, Callen is Special Agent-in-Charge, he answers to Hetty and Sam is just a Special Agent, who answers to Hetty and Callen!

Yet, in the recent episode, after the briefing Sam gives orders on who is to check out what and then who is partnered with whom!

He has over/missed stepped his rank several times in the series or rather the writers have put him in a mission briefing with Hetty, that should have been Callen to be the one to pass the info to the team!

Callen has on a many occasions in the series allowed the team members to question his orders and even talk back! OMG! Gibbs would've slapped them in the back of the head until they were drooling!!!

The writers need get it straight as to who is in charge!!!!

I agree that in past seasons especially the writers screwed up the command structure between the agents. The worst was when they had Deeks--an LAPD detective--knowing more than either Callen or Sam (a former CIA operative and a former SEAL). That seems to be in the past. As for the relationship between Callen and Sam, maybe there isn't that distinction anymore about agent-in-charge although having that distinction would make sense for a command structure. As long as Deeks, Kensi, Nell, or Eric aren't giving orders, I can live with the relationship between Callen and Sam.

Granger then Hetty then Callen. Sam is Senior Field Agent like McGee

Yelp, Granger is a given, being as he is administration/asst director.

Callen is the lead senior field agent meaning he outranks everyone else on the team (besides Hetty and Granger of course)...while Sam is a senior field agent who is technically 1 rank below Callen and is like Callen's second-in-command. But there are a few times when Sam has taken the lead and gave orders to the others...I think this is because Callen & Sam are such close friends and partners that sometimes Callen doesn't mind it and would just let Sam give the orders once in a while, even though he outranks Sam.

If not for her recent injuries, Kensi should have been overdue for an agent-in-charge assignment. Her stint with Granger in Afghanistan did not count. And, no(!), don't put Deeks ever in-charge.

Didn't Kensi disobey a direct order in Afghanistan, if so she wouldn't be receiving a promotion.

reply

The assignment wouldn't be a promotion nor would there be a pay raise. It serves to broaden the perspectives of the agents in understanding what is required of an agent-in-charge. The chance of another disobedience is lessened from that understanding rather than from a symbolic punishment.
