How is Technology Portrayed in Movies?
Movies are a universal tool for understanding certain stories, ideas, and pretty much anything imaginable. Some would even say that movies are the books of our generation. They are great to explain things to people who cannot read or people who speak different languages. Something about the visuals that movies offer makes them a viable source for us to learn from them. A certain aspect of movies that we do not consider is how Technologies are portrayed in different movies.
After watching the movie “Inception” by Christopher Nolan, I sat down to really analyze the way the director incorporates Technology into the movie. I feel like the way that Technology is portrayed throughout the movie is in a negative way. The way the main characters have the control to be able to go into people’s dreams and plant different thoughts and ideologies is a scary thing to realize. Especially since this is a very realistic thing in this day and age. We are able to do much more with the mind that we imagined 4-5 years ago. Although this is the way that Technology is portrayed in the movie, I gave myself time to think of positive uses for this Technology. One example that I came up with is: psychiatrists could use this Technology to get rid of certain phobias that people have. We could use this Technology with people who suffer from certain mental health conditions such as PTSD in order to relieve them from their pain.
I believe that this Technology would be a very controversial Technology if it were to exist in the real world. Like with any Technology, if it were to get into the wrong person’s hands it would be very unfortunate. Under the correct regulations, it would be possible for people to accept this Technology and agree for it to be used on them. I would like to encourage you to reflect on how Technology is portrayed in a movie that you have watched or even this movie. How was Technology portrayed? Is it realistic? Would it be acceptable in today’s society? What is your opinion in Technology?
