If Limbo is...

A world of their own, how come Mal thinks it is reality? I mean by what they have shown, it is a deserted place with no humans but only Cobb and Mal (referring to the scene where they walk together, young and old, hand in hand). Or is it just the way it is portrayed on screen but rather different in (reality) filled with humans from their subconscious?

Because they had lived there for so long that they lost track of reality. The skyscrapers felt like reality to her -- Limbo became her reality.

Limbo is filled by the projections of the people who built it. Normally, the dream is created by the dreamer and filled with projections by the subject. In Limbo, everyone is dreamer and subject. Saito filled his Limbo with guards (the people who carried Cobb up from the sea.)

We don't know if Mal and Cobb filled their Limbo with any projections, but the few scenes are pretty sterile. Cobb added Mal and his kids in the end.
