The Action

On the back of the box there is a quote saying "spectacular action", but the main problem with this film for me was just that - the action. I mean at times it is downright nauseating, like pretty much everything in the third layer, and while there are a few good action bits like the rotating hallway fight involving Joseph Gordon-Levitt I just wish more were well done.

With the movie's crazy high score and placement in the IMDb 250 I am surprised more people don't mention this - then again these days people think movies like the Winter Soldier has great action so it really shouldn't be a surprise.

Anyone else notice this?

Yeah I know what you mean. I like Inception I just thought it could have done more with zero gravity and the city bending stuff. Like a maybe a crazy shootout in that rotating hallway. Most people will tell me I'm just immature wanting more crazy action and I should stick to Transformers. But I agree, it could use allot more action.

I thought the rotating hallway scenes and the anti-gravity scenes were among the best action scenes that I've ever seen. The rest were mediocre (and Nolan is not generally known for his great action sequences), but the rotating hallway scene was worth the IMAX ticket alone.

It's not that I wanted more action, I mean there is already more than there needs to be, what I meant was that the action already present could have been more consistently good.

I've never considered Nolan a great action director, so I was not expecting much. The city scenes and the snow fortress were not that great, but the hotel levels were phenomenal.

I don't consider him an action director either, and the spinning hotel hall is probably the best he has done, but I am consistently surprised by the fact that he continues to insist on putting action in his movies. While I kind of hated Interstellar, I have to admit that the docking scene was very well done - maybe even better than the Hallway scene when I think about it.

reply

I wasn't really that fond of Interstellar, either. The best thing about Interstellar was the music. The docking scene was fine, but I wouldn't put it in the same category as the rotating hallway scene. The choreography of the rotating hallway scene is incredible. In addition, the other action scene from the hotel (the anti-gravity scene) was also extremely well shot.

I know what you mean, when I first saw this movie I thought the action was great but on multiple viewings I thought some action scenes were overdrawn and contrived. Especially dream level 3, Eames is like some kind of superhero. He should be the next James Bond or Jason Bourne. I suppose one could argue that since it was HIS dream, he fantasized himself to be super strong. And talk about all the multitasking he did on that dream level! I think he did most of the work in this mission more than anybody else lol

Considering you also apparently don't like The Winter Soldier's action, have you considered that your opinion regarding what constitutes great action isn't similar to most other people? Winter Soldier's action is pretty clearly one of the best in a film universe that generally excels in action.

Two words: magic frisbee.

A "magic frisbee" in a film franchise that also has the Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, aliens, etc is where you draw the line?

I draw the line at all of that. Yes, they have action scenes, but there is rarely any tension in the Marvel action. Characters fight a lot, yet they survive without much harm after one super-human pummels another. After awhile, the magic of the magic frisbee wanes.

There is a reason why they call it "cartoon violence."
