I just watched it for the second time after few years and it seems a bit different now. I kind of remember that Cobb's subconscious trauma was about his dead children drowned in the water.
Is it possible that there is some director's cut with alternative scenes where for example his kids to turn their faces to him... Uusually I remember movies well... *feel confused*
I think you are remembering Shutter Island. I don't remember that his kids were dead, but his wife was.
