Zachry's Escape

Does anybody recall the scene towards the end of the movie where Zachry rescues the little girl out of the hut she's hiding/trapped in? Let me preface this by saying, I think this film is phenomenal. Nevertheless, my suspension of disbelief completely evaporated when watching this scene.

So to sum it up, Zachry (Tom Hanks) is carrying the young girl in his arms while running away from the cannibals led by Hugh Grant's character. Zachry is inexplicably able to reach the forest without being overtaken. All the while, the savages that are in pursuit are riding horses. Again, Zachry is on foot and carrying a 40 to 60 lb. weight in the front of his body. I'm assuming the forest is at least a small distance (no less than 50 yards) away from the little village. Thus, the small band of savages, unimpeded and on horseback, would have caught up to him just about... IMMEDIATELY! Let's be real, even Forrest Gump-Tom Hanks couldn't have pulled that one off.

Oh, and I should add that Zachry had only about a 2 second "head start".

Ever seen a cat play with a mouse before it finally eats it? They might have let Zachry get ahead on purpose, knowing very well they will easily catch up on him, just for the hunt.
