What was the significance of the tattoo? Plus what was with Tom Hanks' facial tattoo's? Otherwise I loved the make up and the effects in it

If you mean the "shooting star" birthmark, it designated the main character in each segment

1. Adam Ewing
2. Robert Frobisher
3. Louisa Rey
4. Timothy Cavendish
5. Sonmi-451
6. Zachry Bailey

I assume you like the film, so I will leave that Vyvyan Ayrs also has the same pattern on his night coat and it is intended to link certain characters and ideas.
