looks like a BO flop

Doesn't really matter, the budget was only 6 mil and it's on netflix, so I doubt they ever cared if it made much money in theaters or they wouldn't have put it on their site during the release.
The theater run is probably just for award season anyways. It looks like a limited release.
shareIt is, they had to release it to get oscar noms, if they just released online they wouldn't be up for any, but with this they can probably score Elba a nom and hopefully more than that.
That's what I was saying. They have to have a theatrical run to get Academy nominations. Obviously Idris will probably get a nom, but Abraham should really get some recognition. He carried this film pretty well.
shareThis isn't about box office. It's about providing non tent-pole content on a subscriber based platform. As long as Netflix customer base continues to grow and pay it's monthly fee box office doesn't matter.
It's mainly in theaters for award season consideration and for those who want to see it on a big screen. Future of movie theaters is for movies that are complimented by the big screen, which in my opinion is a lot more than just super hero movies but we'll see. I do hope this strategy shakes things up and writer/directors have an outlet for their stories.
Well said.
shareI think this is the furthest thing from Box Office you will ever get.
If people don't get this message, then I doubt anything ever will. We are too shielded from the harsh realities of life and as bad as it is, it's great to see this story being highlighted for all of us to see. Well, those of us who choose to see it. I'm proud to say, I will be one!! It needs NO award, it IS an Award!!
Ciao!

Did you even read the article you posted?
Netflix doesn't care if it "flops" in theaters.
I was not posting the link to make a statement about what Netflix cares about. Who cares about what Netflix thinks. I was making an objective statement about THEATER box office grosses.

It's in 31 theaters. It's a useless statement.
shareNext time let us know when Netflix gets into major theaters..... I suspect a different outcome then. This film is amazing.

It was in 31 theaters lol. WHat do you expect?
It doesn't matter how much it makes in BO. It's only there to win an Oscar
Movies playing in 4 theaters usually cross the 100k mark. This was playing in 31 and barely got half of that.
And i agree its only there to qualify for oscars but seeing this low audience interest could hurt it, since netflix doesn't release any data we have no idea how many ppl actually watched it.
There was also next to no publicity for it and when they say limited run, they mean it. I think it was in my local for a few days.
shareThis movie was pretty good. At least far more substance then the usual crap Hollywood churns out.

Absolutely agree with you when it comes to substance. So tired of Hollywood's style/cgi/a-list actor (if one exists), over substance. I feel this is one movie that deserves to win an Oscar!!

Day-and-dates are gonna start winning Oscar's and rules will be re-written... Netflix is aggressively going after the statues. Which they should.
This is probably the first "obviously-TRYING-to-win-awards"-movie I've seen in the last 15 years that I think actually deserves them.
Ya know how Eastwood releases one every couple years that just stinks of pandering and patronization? That sh%t gets old real quick - especially when those films actually win. But this film... wasn't amazing or anything. But it made me FEEL like it was bigger than me - like I was watching magic.
Originally I attributed True Detective's "larger than life" feel to Fukunaga's purposeful attempt to shoot season one "90's-action style" and also the use of actual film. Being a youngin' in the 90's, or whenever you grew up, you tend to appreciate the look of whatever era. It secretly entraps you.
But man... no effing way. Cary Fukunaga is just a freak of nature I guess. Every shot makes perfect sense. You can literally watch BoNN and scene after scene say, "Wow, the way they shot that makes perfect sense". Or think about how an average director would've shot some conventional scenes compared to how Cary F tackled it. Granted, he wrote the damn thing too, so I'm sure he already filmed the movie in his head as he was writing it. But still... I was just blown away.
