So...what was all the fuss about with this movie?

I didn't get it. The plot is thin (it's a slasher movie, young people are killed by psychos. That's the plot). The acting is ok I guess for a horror film. The 'homage' for 70s and 80s isn't much of a homage, except for music. If it took place in 2022, there would be no difference. I just don't understand the praise for it. Also, way too long, 80 minutes would have been enough.

Agreed, no big deal here, beside the old lady Pearl and Maxine being played by the same actress the rest is almost a slasher by the numbers and a little moronic being the villains an old couple, I think there is some commentary about sexual and social repression the movie try to tell but is nothing really deep.

I think the fuss came from the prequel Pearl that add some value to this movie, I hope for Maxxine they made something more close to Pearl than X.

Agreed. Some nice nudity (though Jenny Ortega didn’t have the guts) but otherwise it’s more generic boring slasher crap.

Yep. In 2023 it’s pretty hard to do slashers because we’ve seen it all. They either have to give us a really cool and interesting villain or really try to add different elements(maybe a mystery element?) .. they didn’t with X so it was just ok

Why can’t Hollywood give us a cool new horror villain..? They don’t seem to be able to do that anymore for some reason. Art the clown I guess is one but not sure if he lasting potential

Gabriel in Malignant (2021) by director James Wan was pretty cool, but I think that was just a one time film with no sequels planned.

Yeah I’m with you. I liked the time period this was set in and was pretty violent at times but overall it’s just another slasher. It doesn’t do anything new so I’m not sure why it’s rated as high as it is. I remember trying to watch it a second time and didn’t make it 30 minutes

I think the movie did a pretty good job of ringing some nostalgia bells for those of us who dig the 70s and 80s era of horror movies. I'm pretty forgiving if the movie itself doesn't insult my intelligence. I liked the movie overall and I think Mia Goth could very much be her generation's Shelley Duvall (that sentiment might strike some as odd--I think Shelley Duvall was a great actress who hit a wall in 1980 for whatever reason and never recovered).

Other commenters missed the point of this movie. It definitely is an homage to 70's horror. If you watch Texas Chainsaw you will notice a lot of similarities. The plot is also reminiscent of that time. This has nothing to do with 80's horror. The 80's is going to be explored in Maxxxine. The movie is about how the media we watch within an era influences our decisions and personalities. That's why Pearl was the way it was.

This movie also had new, more sympathetic villains than what we typically see in this day and age.
