It was quite a contrast to the bartender, who always looked like he had just shaven two minutes ago! Facilities on the ship were sophisticated enough that Jim should have been able to shave properly if he'd wanted to.

I've never understood women who find that scruffy look attractive. Aside from the fact that it always makes me think the guy looks like some homeless person who sleeps on park benches, there's the fact that such bristly stubble can cause some very painful chafing, which is not fun at all.

Beards can be soft and feel nice -- but stubble can draw blood.
