The Type of Re-Make that SHOULD be Encouraged

Robocop, Ghostbusters, Red Dawn, Evil Dead, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, there is a VERY long line of Hollywood remaking movies that people love & cherish...

This, however, was a remake of a bad movie. That, at least in my view, is an acceptable remake. They aren't cheapening anything, they aren't trashing any beloved childhood memories.

There are maybe a few people that would object to it, but by and large, well, no one, or at least not many people are going to complain about remaking or rebooting a flick that wasn't good the first time around.

I agree.
A remake should only be attempted if it has something new to say or can be improved on the original.
Dredd achieved this in spades!

This isn't a remake though, it's another adaptation. Like Man of Steel isn't a remake of Superman The Movie and Batman Begins isn't a remake of Batman (1989).

EDIT: Also nothing "should" be encouraged.

"Need" is just a fiction. As is "should", "must", "value" and "importance".

Correct.
Dredd is better defined as a reboot as it shares very little with the 1995 film.
An even better definition was voiced by Judge Dredd creator John Wagner, who called Dredd (2012) a 'proper make'.

@generationofswine Yep, just like the original Ocean's 11, Judge Dredd was a bad movie that had a great concept, and therefore was an ideal candidate for a remake/reboot.

Now if studios would reboot movies like Timecop instead of movies like Ben-Hur, I'd be very happy indeed.

Judge Dredd was a remake of Demolition Man.
