Over attractive woman with a implausible look

Come oooon...I do get the fact that women have to be hot to suit the desires of the average joe when they starr in movies, BUT Andersons appearance actually distracts from the films tonality. Can't we have believable female characters anymore? Remember ALIEN? Brilliant Cast! Sigeurney Weaver is "attractive" BUT her looks never got in the way. I'm really sick of this "fua&%abilty quotient" in most (US) movies!

I'd argue that Anderson is refreshingly un-glamorous in the film and that is no disrespect aimed at actress Olivia Thirlby, who is a fine looking woman.
Besides, check out the comic version, she was no slouch!

@mubhceeb My only problem with Anderson is that I would've sworn that she wore pink lipstick. I haven't read the comic but I'm pretty sure that would've gone against Judge regulations.

reply

In the comic smoko, the Psi Judges were often given more freedom to be express themselves more individualistically due to their unique talents and Anderson was no exception.
Not that Dredd didn't make his objections clear, which made for some spikey interaction between the two characters.

It's well worth picking up some of the collected editions to experience Judge Dredd's rich storytelling!
Anderson makes her debut with the infamous Judge Death in this volume:

@mubhceeb OK, well that explains the lipstick. I would've liked to see that explanation, as well as some of those spikey interactions, in the movie. But as it is, Dredd is still a terrific action movie.

Glad you enjoyed the movie smoko!

Now that Anderson's got full Judge status, maybe she'd give Dredd a run for his money-after all, she did save his arse!!!

Let's hope that's explored in a sequel! 😉

So... attractive women cannot exist in fiction because it upsets feminists and people like you?

Anderson made it clear that the helmet hinders her psychic abilities. That is a legitimate excuse to not wear a helmet. Besides the helmet she is dressed exactly like a judge.

I think that if an attractive woman's presence is so disturbing to you that that is all you can focus on (and not the amazing character Anderson displays here) then you must be some small-minded virgin or sex-obsessed idiot.

reply

red's reply was classic too, "A bullet in the head will hinder your psychic abilities more."

reply

I'm far from being a feminist, but her pretiness broke the movie. Never in a million years that character would have THAT look in any believeable universe.

Look up Isreali military women on Google

"I stooped to pick a buttercup. Why people leave buttocks lying around, I've no idea."

reply

She wasn't that hot to be honest.

reply

How does it distract? She has a pretty face and otherwise is dressed exactly like Dredd. Weaver showed a hell of a lot more skin in Alien

reply

It's good that Dredd wore a mask, otherwise the women watching this would be totally distracted, right?

reply

In this particular movie I disagree. I don't think Anderson was sexualized at all, but I do agree that generally Hollywood is much more-often casting unrealistically young and good-looking men and women than it used to for certain roles, and I have had this feeling more so in other movies. It's especially easy to see that the average actor's age, compared to presumed character age, has decreased if you compare modern movies to those from about 30 years ago and longer.

reply

I agree.

Anderson's gender was irrelevant, asside from the character Kay, who attempted to intimidate her with his threats of sexual assault.
Dredd's treatment of her was that of any other Judge, her sex was not an issue.

If it's overt sexualisation of female characters you're after, you need to look at the Marvel and DC film universes.

Ah, but she was sexualized- except the film makers can say that it wasn't them doing it, it was all in Kay's (filmed) imagination.

reply

I wouldn't describe that scene as titillating or erotic though.

I was going to put a caveat in but I couldn't be bothered to type any more last night at 3am over here in the UK haha, but I guess I have to now.

The sexual intimidation by Kay was entirely relevant to the plot and situation, it was not sexualisation or exploitational. It was very brief, subtle, not at all gratuitous, and most of all believable. I see your point that the makers did it this way to "get away" with adding a sexual element in the film but I don't think that was their intention here.
