That's exactly right. For Tom she was just a trophy or him to show off and to bear him an heir, and nothing more. Gatsby loved the idea of her, unfortunately that wasn't who she really was. She was just a vapid and shallow person who would valued her life of prestige and comfort over any real happiness.
shareSomething tells me you were never forced to read the book in highschool. I was. Yeah. Pretty well everyone in this story is a stupid jerk except for Nick, Gatsby, and Mr. Wilson. Frankly I wish Mr. Wilson had killed Tom. After all Tom had been having an affair with his wife!
shareGatsby is partners with a corrupt Jewish mobster and spends the entirety of the book attempting to break up a family. He's a horrible person and the 2013 version of Nick is just as bad as he aids and abets Gatsby's scheming and doesn't even seem bothered in the slightest when he believes Gatsby ran over a woman with his care and then just scampered off.
shareI really don't remember a mention of him working with mobsters. All I remember is Tom being a racist bigot and Gatsby wishing he could have gotten with Daisy.
