A bad film from whatever angle you attempt to dissect it from...

Let's sum this film up...

"Nothing new here, move on"...

This film is a mish mash of various ideas, all done to death in previous films, underpinned with the most basic storyline ever.

The curiosity killed the cat scenario - a bit like descent - where characters keep pushing the boundaries when most people would turn back after the first hurdle - but then we wouldn't have a film.

I liked the evil looking statue but that's about it. The filn was slow paced. The acting ameaturish.

Man I know I'm going to get slated by some of you for this, but I don't mind, you have yet to see a few more films in your life - if you thought this was exciting and gripping - it's time to get out more!!

IMO, this movie is an example of, if you can immerse yourself into the story, have some suspension of disbelief, then it becomes VERY effective. I thought the nightmarish imagery and atmosphere makes for a movie that can be quite scary if watched alone in the dark. Following the characters on their journey, the uncertainty of what was actually going on, it felt primal and IMO that is what horror needs to be. Now if you want a thriller with a complex plot, snappy dialog, twists and turns that make your brain click, then look elsewhere. You want visceral HORROR, this movie works just fine.

Almost ALL horror movies will have holes and rely somewhat the characters stupidity in retrospect. I've seen hundreds upon hundreds of horror movies, being a huge fan of the genre. If you have truly seen enough of these films, you'd know that 95% of them aren't going to win any awards for acting any time soon.

I've noticed that many people these days just can't sit through a movie unless something exciting is going on every couple minutes. IMO, these kind of movies get on my nerves because it seems overly convoluted. To me FEAR is a simple emotion, all you need to do is build up tension and eventually thrust the audience into a situation that makes them look at it stark in the face. There is no need to complicate it more than that.

All that said, the movie reminded me of a mix between The Exorcist and Evil Dead, minus the black humor. It felt like the Exorcist as far as the possession aspects go, but like Evil Dead because of how physically powerful and mortally dangerous the demonic possession had become. I haven't seen too many movies about a shrine that instantly possesses people when it "looks" at them. Speaking of which, the part where the statue turns its head and looks at the lead actress was quite chilling. On the other hand, the movie doesn't feel like a broad narrative or even an account of possession like The Exoricst, but instead like an isolated tale, like one you would tell around a camp fire, as it is almost entirely from the perspective of the main characters. One where the journey takes you away to the location, where the description becomes deadly real. The semi-twist, where one immediately assumes that the cult is the evil of the film, and then finds that they are combating the evil is nothing new, but works very well in this movie.

I notice that the reason a lot of people hate on horror movies like this one, is because they overly rationalize the movie and despise the stupid things the characters do, but c'mon. Generally speaking, there wouldn't be a movie if the characters didn't slip up and succumb to some level of stupidity. It is easy to look at it in hind sight. "I would of done this, or she should of done that" is pointless. The movie is a FANTASY, a work of FICTION. There has to be some failure, some trip up that gets the spiral going. Sadly people like you will probably hate most horror and that is probably why most horror gets 3/5 stars on Netflix. Lol.

All in all I found this movie to be way above average as far as recent American horror movies are concerned. If you love the genre, can find a way to immerse yourself into the story (turn off all the lights, use headphones/ear buds, watch alone, etc.), you will probably dig this movie. If you hated movies like The Blair Witch Project because you couldn't immerse yourself into the story, suspend your disbelief, watched it and thought "this is just a bunch of kids filming in the woods with noises" because it failed to capture you and fill you with the same sense of dread as the actors portrayed, then maybe you should reevaluate why you even watch horror movies in the first place.

Read that article. Probably the greatest master of Horror and Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock would disagree with you.

Your link does not work.

I just finished watching the movie and I enjoyed it a lot. I'm not sure why it's rated so low here. I am glad I didn't pay attention to the rating, and watched it anyway. A good horror movie, imo.

^^ That was a great article. Thank you.

I thought the actors in the three main roles were fine. And I didn't see any gaping plot holes. Obviously you have to accept the idea that supernatural forces like this actually exist, at least while you're watching the movie.

I think it's a little ridiculous that people don't believe characters would take risks like they do in this movie. Obviously they didn't fully understand the danger they were in, and you hear about people doing risky things all the time. She's a reporter, and some of them are willing to go into war torn areas even after other reporters have been killed. None of these things are plot holes.

Horror films often get overly judged because people approach them with too much logic and not enough suspension of disbelief, I like to immerse myself in a story, and in that way they are always more effective. This movie was pleasantly surprising and better than so many horror films out these days.

Every time I am watching a film I am not looking for award winning stuff. Sometimes I just want a quick creepy romp to blow an hour and a half. This movie kept me entertained well enough so I am pleased. It was far far from the worst thing I have ever seen. I would rate it at about a 6/10.... maybe lower if I really really analyze it.

reply

Yeah, I gave it a 6/10, as well. The low budget kind of hurt it, and the story seemed like it should've been fleshed out a bit more. As it is, it's still better than most of the bigger budget, CGI horror junk that Hollywood churns out.

I'm up to the part where the chick got shot in the leg with a crossbow bolt, and finally everything makes sense. polaks aren't in every country other then poland to work, they're demons, here to take everything, not just jobs! our wives, children!! argh!

reply

You're right. It's awful. It was soooooooooo slow paced. People staring and not answering. People staring at doors or random objects for no apparent reason. Lots of yelling foreign dialogue with no subtitles. Stilted acting. Not just amateur.

Yes, the statue was cool. That's about it.

Ehh, I thought it was pretty good as far as horror is concerned. There are way more horror movies that are more linear and boring than this one.

reply

I wouldn't say it's great, but it was competently made and I've seen much worse. I thought it was pretty slow though.

Check out this pompous sh!t, "you have yet to see a few more films in your life," as if he is an authority and qualified to tell anyone what they can and cannot enjoy. Just another delusional hipster, folks, ignore him.

I completely agree with you!
