To the no subtitles whiners...

I agree, I mean sure I'd have liked to know what they're saying but I also liked the fact that you're literally no more ahead than the characters are at that point when they meet the family.

I understand what you're saying, and you're right, it is effective when the polish characters are speaking to each other and when they're yelling at the captives. BUT! When the female lead turns into the demon and starts replying in Polish or Latin or whatever it was, then I got frustrated. I guess, if we're supposed to be seeing it from Marcus' POV, it goes along with what you're saying, but...at that point it did feel like a foreign film with no subtitles.

Agreed. Loved the decision not to use subtitles for the villagers - put us right in the shoes of the main characters. And I know its cool to hate "recent" mainstream horror, so maybe its just me, but that's one thing I thought The Grudge did really well, too - really gave me a sense of Clea Duvall's character's isolation and how alone she felt. I'd feel much the same having to live in a country where my language wasn't spoken much.

It also would have spoiled the movie because apparently the priest is saying Christian sayings like the Lord's Prayer. I thought that they worshiped a demon at first cause of the statue and the killings but if I knew they were saying "Our Father, who art in heaven..." kind of thing I would know they were Christian.

Wow, what a snotty and defensive post. What you don't get, obviously, is that "we're supposed to be as confused as the Canadians" is only an explanation up to a certain point. The movie presents us with a twist in the final confrontation, and it's obvious things have not been exactly as they seem, but because there are no subs most viewers will never know what exactly the real nature of the cult is. We finally get one line from the blonde guy at the end but that's not nearly enough.

The blonde guy should have said more in terms of exposition to the Canadian guy at the end, or there should have been subs. That's all there is to it, really.

I thought it was much scarier WITHOUT them

Just finished watching this on blu-ray and was surprised there being no subtitles. At least the English should have had subtitles even though the Polish and Latin undestandably no subtitles so that we would be as confused as the characters.
