I could not get the statue out of my head...had to watch the movie again. Third time I have seen it...the statue scene has got to be one of the creepiest I have ever scene in a movie.
I was eating a bowl of cereal just after the movie started and during the dream sequence when Eric showed up in Carmen's room (behind her), it scared the living daylights out of me. Definitely wasn't prepared for that. Fun stuff!

I think the creepiest thing with the statue was how it was smiling when she looked back at it, the face has a sort of lop sided grin that it definitely didn't have at first. It's such a smug look, you could see it thinking 'you're mine now' or 'I'm going to get out of here'. It's such a small thing compared to the beating heart and gushing blood but it was what did it for me. It was actually that smile that clued me in to what the twist would be and I totally ruined the ending for myself by figuring it out based on that and the villagers wanting to keep people away from the fog. Maybe I've seen too many horror films to be surprised any more ^_^
I wonder what the heck that scene with Eric was about other than being creepy as, it was the same sort of thing that happened after seeing the statue, the voices and heavy breathing. Did the demon know she was going to come and look at the statue so was influencing her at a distance? Or was it trying to lure her to it? Or did the film makers just think it was cool and scary and not care if it didn't really make sense lol?
This and VHS 2 had me screaming like constantly. I would have to give VHS 2's cult story the No. 1 spot on my holy crap level of freaking out and I legit took a 1 mg Xanax afterwards (they're prescribed; no judging) but that statue scene and even the crappy demon effects in the house near the end had me screaming my sweet arse off! No Xanax needed but I still had a mini anxiety attack. Jumpscares are basically all that get me, so I'll chop the statue up to that, but the demon family omfg I was crying (my exterior way of showing I'm scared out of my mind). They looked so cheesy but it was still scary. I'll also thrown in the movie Dead Birds' Jumpscares cuz oh my God there were so many and they were effective.
